• Hope by Ali B.

The clenched fist has long been used as a symbol of resistance. This can be traced back to the 19th century, when revolutionaries first used it against the European monarchies. It was later adopted by Europe’s anti-fascist movement. In the 1960’s, most famously through Tommy Smith and John Carlos at the Mexico City Olympics, it became both an iconic symbol of the Black Power Movement and a universal representation of the struggle for civil and human rights. The image symbolizes the ongoing racism and injustice throughout the world, but it is also a beacon of power, pride and perseverance – holding the promise of ‘Hope’.
• Ursa Major from: Alameda, California year: 2016

Reaching to grab what is within her grasp is Ursa Major, a 14 foot tall, grizzly bear sow. She may simply be reaching for berries but perceivably she is reaching higher: to the northern sky and the constellation that is her name, Ursa Major. In navigation, the constellation is useful in pointing the way to the North Star.
Ursa Major’s pose is inspiring, she brings the gaze and hopes of the participant skyward. She also demonstrates respect for the bears and nature, her pose is not like a taxidermy bear. She is in her natural state and unthreatening. With a durable, unique material that was used on their previous Burning Man project (Penny the Goose), Ursa Major’s fur will be made of US and Canadian pennies. The pattern and feel will be like fur. • ReVitalize Toothbrush collective by: Scott London year: 2013

We are “Revitalize.” Our goal is to bring the collective conciseness of Burning Man to the outside world. We looked at one of the BM Principles, "Leave No Trace" " and are using it to educate kids across the country on the importance of recycling plastic by recycling their TOOTHBRUSH.

The Toothbrush is an everyday item that many of us forget is often made from plastic. We are asking schools to participate in collecting old used toothbrushes to help us build a communal art project.

The toothbrush sculpture is a large globe, illustrating plastic is the plaque of the earth. It will look like a colorful large sphere, that once discovered upon the viewer will be shocked to realize it is made from toothbrushes.
Lets use our collective power in putting plastic in its proper place through recycling.
• Truth is Beauty is the second sculpture in a three-part series featuring singer/dancer Deja Solis, the first of which was Bliss Dance (2010). For Truth is Beauty, Deja stands on her toes, head back, arms raised, in an expression of radical self-acceptance and love. She can do this because she is safe. With the female body exposed and demystified you will see past what has been objectified and used to disempower: it’s the feeling, energy, strength, power… the person that remains. These sculptures featuring women safe in the present to express themselves, are meant to help raise consciousness around violence against women, begin a healing process to make room for women’s voices, and ultimately result in a balance of energy that will allow women and men to thrive… My intent is that these sculptures express this healing energy and inspire us to take action; to finally say enough is enough!

 • Quadrupod 2.0 by Scott Parenteau

The Quadrupod is a giant metal walking vehicle that is driven from within a metal pod cabin. This giant machine walks on 4 electrically powered legs and looks like something out of a Jules Vern novel. The purpose of this work is to show how just a little low tech engineering and a pile of scrap metal can be used to create something that appears to be advanced technology. This art piece is meant to inspire do it yourself Sci-Fi
• Providing WIFI at Exodus was Fun - I had my little Starlink terminal so I used it to gave people WIFI during exodus. At the start of each pulse I would show this sign to all the cars near me. At first everyone thought I was joking and laughed. Watching their faces go from laughing to "oh really I can watch cat videos right here and now?!" was hilarious. For many Burners it was their first time communicating with family and friends since before the burn and they were absolutely ecstatic. Exodus was super fun for me. I also ran the WIFI network at our camp. We had 100% uptime between the Starlink and the participant network because Dan rules!

 • R-Evolution from: San Francisco, CA year: 2015

Constructed of steel rod and balls and covered in stainless steel mesh, with LED lighting effects, R-Evolution is a 48 foot tall sculpture of a woman, Deja Solis, standing firmly with both feet on the ground, eyes closed, arms open at her sides, palms forward, a peaceful expression- present.

The culmination of The Bliss Project, a series of three monumental sculptures of a woman, Deja Solis, expressing her humanity, R-Evolution like Bliss Dance and Truth is Beauty, is intended to demand a change in perspective… to be a catalyst for social change. She is intended to challenge the viewer to see past the sexual charge that has developed around the female body which has been used for power and control, to the human being. We hope to inspire men and women to take action to end violence against women, making room for women’s voices, thus allowing both women and men to live fully and thrive. URL: http://www.blissdance.us

 • Chill Zone - This was an elevated trampoline with shade and stuffed animals. A wonderful place to rest. I ran into a guy here who added it to "list of nap spots" an actual notebook he was making notes in of locations he could crash. I encourage him to share that list. Like a rockstar librarian style list of places to rest. Man I could use that sometimes when I'm exhausted. If you see this nap guy, please make this a thing!

 • Catharsis by Arthur Mamou-Mani and the Catharsis Crew

Catharsis is a fractal gallery for our infinite dreams.

It welcomes all arts in the spirit of radical inclusion and self-expression, acting both as amphitheater on playa and a travelling museum for burners around the world. After the event, it will be re-assembled in other cities.

Catharsis is a physical representation of the hyperbolic space. It is a three-dimensional representation of a geometry that could only exist in an another reality – or does it?

This infinite space has seven gateways elevating to the sky and getting increasingly intricate and intimate, forming a dream-like set of galleries for everyone to use and place art of all kind.
• Desert Guard by: Lu Ming from: Beijing, China year: 2018

Fenghaizhen’s design is inspired by the armor of Genghis Khan whose Mongolian empire ruled China during a part of the 14th century. The Mongolian army resisted their enemies’ aggression thanks to Genghis Khan’s military tactics, a strong system of weapons and their special armor. It had a very primitive but effective shock absorbing and impact diverting system. This art piece enlarges the armor to a height of 15 metres weighing 10 tons and embedded the soul of a Mongolian warrior. It wants to remind everyone, that we must never use artificial intelligence for war. Otherwise, humanity creates weapons that kill us. We hope that this warrior makes us realise that we shouldn’t only worship technology, but also put restrictions in place. Contact: beijingburners@gmail.com

 • Paraluna by: Christopher Schardt from: Oakland, CA year: 2018

Paraluna combines kinetic sculpture, LEDs and music. Its main component is a disc 10m in diameter with 17,280 LEDs. A computer controls the LEDs while rotating, raising, lowering, and tilting the disc.

Some of the LED patterns work with the rotation of the disk, creating spirals. Others use persistence-of-vision, making an image hover in space above the spinning LEDs. Spokes demonstrates both of these styles: https://photos.app.goo.gl/DcP9IauNTjRHENUh2

Surrounding the disc are several high-quality speakers that play classical music at comfortable, yet immersive volume, creating a comfortable, peaceful place to be. Patterns are chosen to complement each musical piece, as with Firmament:
• Duncan Rawlinson's work is a harmonious union of vibrant color and abstract beauty, a testament to his exceptional artistic vision. His creations illuminate the canvas with vivid hues of city lights and abstract skylines, where the cacophony of urban life converges into a symphony of colors.

The compositions, adorned with bold color blocks and industrial textures, bring a dynamic perspective to the urban landscape. Each image in this series stands as an emblem of Rawlinson's unique interpretation of the city's vibrant energy. His use of vibrant reds, light blues, oranges, and dark cyan, create a stunning visual narrative that transcends the boundaries of traditional art forms.

While technology has played a role in the creation of these pieces, the true focus remains on the vivid colors and the abstract beauty that shines through. The final compositions, reflecting the interplay of vibrant colors and abstract elements, pay a visually stunning tribute to the city's pulsating energy and the tranquil beauty inherent within abstract art.
• This unique piece of art at the Valley Springs Welcome Center & Rest Area in South Dakota captivates visitors and passersby alike with its fusion of traditional and modern elements. At first glance, the sculpture appears to be a tipi skeleton, a nod to the indigenous history of the region. However, upon closer inspection, one realizes it is crafted from an unexpected material—concrete. The innovative use of this sturdy, modern material serves as a bridge between the past and the present, providing a thought-provoking juxtaposition that sparks the imagination. As travelers pause at this rest area along their journey, they are invited to reflect on the rich cultural heritage of the area and the resilience of the human spirit.
• This intriguing black and white photograph captures the stark beauty of winter with a minimalist composition. Slender sticks, or possibly reeds, emerge from the icy surface, surrounded by snow. The abstract image evokes feelings of solitude and serenity, highlighting the subtle yet powerful presence of nature in even the most simplistic of scenes. Photographer Duncan Rawlinson skillfully uses contrast and texture to draw the viewer's eye to the quiet strength and resilience of these delicate forms against the frozen landscape.
• Consumption (build) by Tom Boughner and the Desert Propaganda Collective

Consumption is a 45′ tall sculpture in the shape of a dollar sign ($) assembled from discarded household appliances (washers, dryers, fridges, stoves, etc). Ninety appliances are layered and stacked to create the “S” of the dollar sign.

Consumption brings our focus to the end of the era of consumerism and overconsumption. Our current trajectory is no longer sustainable and we must change. Reflect upon the mountain of waste to guide our beliefs, ideas and spirits to a more rational use of earth’s limited resources.

We all play a part in the chain of excess that starts with raw materials and ends in landfills and oceans. Many factors tie us to our throw-away society. We are driven to
overconsumption.
• I swear Burners are the most badass humans. I was really struggling to get our camp network up and running properly. This was during the transition from the temporary participant network to the main participant netork and I was very lost. I had misconfigured it the setup in several ways and could not unfuck it myself. Low and behold a networking expert visiting our camp so I asked for help. The playa providses. Dan selflessly helped to get us up and running spending many hours with me hacking on configs etc. Here I am, a complete stranger to Dan and he spends a HUGE amount of time helping to get us online. This is the kind of playa gift that makes burning man so great. Burners selflessly helping other Burners without anything or even any expectation of anything in return. The network was immediately put to good use. The Instagrammers were able to start posting right away. Thank goodmess! Gotta keep the dopamine flowing. Seriously though, my campmates and neighbors updated logistics plans and corrdinated with people off playa for replacement parts and you know like more nachos n stuff. Medical phone calls and other family emergencies got sorted out as well with the network. But mostly it was just cat videos. Thank you for helping us Dan. You are an absolute legend!

 • Consumption by Tom Boughner and the Desert Propaganda Collective

• Leaving The Playa - This is what it looks like when you put your camera bag away and have to use your phone to take a picture. The horror! ;) You'd think after all these years I would know to never put my camera away, ever. You know you're tired when the fundamentals go out the window.

 • Skywhale: The Not ShyWhale by: Blake Marcus, Chris Welch, Seven from: Amherst, MA year: 2019

The SkyWhale is a life sized flying technicolor whale and she will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder within all who see, touch, and listen to the piece as she arrives into the dusty desert. She strives to open the possibility of using the sky as a 3-dimensional medium for art. In nature, water creatures live in a place physically below that of terrestrial humans, and they have been downstream of many harmful human activities. SkyWhale aims to show that there can be progress and she can help heal and transform the human relationship with Nature. In recognition of the metamorphosis theme, the SkyWhale will embody the transformation of a sea creature to dream that takes to the air. • Desert Guard Build by: Lu Ming from: Beijing, China year: 2018

 • Serpent Mother from: San Francisco, CA year: 2015

The Serpent Mother is a 168′ long sculpture of a skeletal serpent, coiled around her egg. Propane fire runs down her spine, with 41 poofers erupting from the top of her gleaming vertebrae. Reaching 20’ in the air, her hydraulically-actuated head and jaws chomp at the sky.

The serpent is a highly kinetic, participant-controlled installation. Fire effects are a major interactive and sculptural element of the piece, controlled by pushing buttons located on the ribs. The audience is invited to direct her movements, using controls that move the head and jaws, effectively making each show a unique event created by the participants.

Twice every evening, the operator crew will perform methanol shows, shooting multi-colored flames 40′ in the air from the egg, illuminating the night sky. URL: http://flaminglotus.com/art/the-serpent-mother/ Contact: info@flaminglotus.com

 • One of my favorite experiences this burn was controlling these 500AMP spotlights wirelessly using a tablet. You drag your finger across the tablet screen and the spotlights move accordingly. Also these folks let me put on welders glasses so I could stick my face in front of the beam and see the arc light. It was scary as hell and my face got hot very fast but damn was it incredible! Thank you! (These we're previously military spotlights that would have infrared beams so the battlefield would be illuminated to soldiers wearing infrared goggles... In that situation the beams were invisible to the enemy.)

Island of Lost Buoys
by: Lillian Heyward and The Island of Lost Buoys, a Create Change Project
from: Bluffton, SC
year: 2019

On the playa is an Island, a wooden tree dominates the center made of recycled pallets, crates and drift wood. Leaves of sculpted plastic bottles rustle in the wind. Strung from a branch is a hammock made of fishing net attached to a ocean buoy marooned on the beach. Hanging from the branches are sea buoys and balls providing a place to write names or leave a message to those who will come after.

Hanging from branches are bamboo wind chimes that softly clatter in the breeze. It is an island, a refuge, a place of calm and childhood in the stormy seas of life. It appears out of the playa as a mirage, the fantasy playground of youth. Discarded materials transform into an oasis, as our adult lives transform back to childhood. Bangarang!
by: Dusty Nation, Lead Artist Cameron Anne Mason
from: Seattle, WA
year: 2019

In a temporary city in a constant state of metamorphosis, Chroma Commons creates a sense of place using ephemeral materials: Silk, color, and air. Beckoning from across the playa, a circle of banners dyed along the color wheel creates a kinetic silken environment and provides ever-changing views of the city from a dynamic interior.

In the center is the Prism, a triangular tower with a sound installation using noise-reducing technology to create a sanctuary of quiet. Benches provide places to gather, rest, and commune with other Burners.

At night, the spectrum of color expands. Images are rear-projected onto a band of acrylic panels at the top of the Prism, color-changing lighting bathes the banners, and ambient light glows around seating.
Therolin no2
by: Ryan Elmandorf
from: Denver, CO
year: 2019

Therolin is a Theremin but instead of playing from a speaker the instrument is a very large guitar string electronically strummed, using an 8 inch X 20 ft pipe as a resonating body. The large pipe juts up from the playa at a very low angle. It ends at eye height. Below it’s opening a small podium awaits. As the participant reaches out to touch the podium, they will notice a soft musical sound starting to emit. If they move their hand closer to the antenna, the pitch of the sound will rise, and as they move their hand away the pitch will fall. The experience will be the interface of a traditional theramin, but with a more real, physical sound in lieu of the traditional synthesized sound.

• FloBot by: Jessica Levine from: South Lake Tahoe, CA year: 2018

FloBot is an interactive flower-like steel sculpture with a character all her own. She will stand on exposed roots as she evolves into a blossomed being. People will be able to climb up the roots and “get inside her head” bouncing and rocking with the use of large suspension springs. Flo represents the notion of learning to flow with all of the parts of one’s self, and finding strength within them. Her roots correlate with all of the deepest parts of ourselves–the buried parts, which make us who we are. Exposing the roots and making them a part of the blossom at the top represents the idea that everything is an integral part of the whole self, even (and especially) the buried parts–not just the pretty flowery surface parts.

• This minimal and calming photograph captures a tranquil scene of a thin slice of water and a subtle layer of ice. The image features an abstract and atmospheric perspective on the delicate balance between the frozen and liquid states of water, evoking feelings of serenity and solitude. Photographer Duncan Rawlinson uses the natural patterns and textures of the ice and water to create a visually striking yet peaceful composition, reminiscent of winter scenes and the quiet beauty of nature.
• An aerial perspective captures the serene beauty of a small island, home to a quaint cottage, located within the picturesque 1000 Islands region along the Saint Lawrence River in Ontario, Canada. The scene, devoid of visitors, suggests that it is the off-season. The island's clear waters exhibit an enchanting blend of light blue and green hues, inviting the viewer to imagine a peaceful retreat.

The compact island houses a charming cottage, equipped with solar panels on its roof, demonstrating an eco-conscious choice in this idyllic setting. A few sparse trees punctuate the landscape, while the dock, tucked away, indicates a pause in water-based activities. The tranquility of the island and its surroundings evoke a sense of solace and calm, offering an ideal destination for a restful escape from the bustle of everyday life.

Photographer Duncan Rawlinson captured this moment during a spring morning, using a unique aerial viewpoint. The stillness of Chichester Island, seemingly suspended in time, beckons those in search of a serene and intimate getaway.
• Lovely Burner - It was so wonderful to see Steve out there just killin it. Watching Steve interact with Burners who were making photos of themselves in front of the art he (and crew) made was special. He would patiently wait for "his turn" in order to capture shots of he and his brother's piece. The dude literally helped make these incredible pieces of art that other people were using as a backdrop for photos of themselves and he would wait patiently as the light faded. I respect the humility and the art.

 • Screenshots of the moment Twitch streamer LooMinairy achieved Burnception.

LooMinairy himself was live streaming from the playa in an RV using the cell phone tower and a cell booster. The video feed was then brought into BRCvr (drive-in style screen made of Porta-Potties in a dome) and LooMinairy live streamed himself exploring his own livestream from inside BRCvr. It was Burnception and it was fucking glorious. It was the highlight of the 2020 burn for me.

• The Harmoniscope from: Seattle, WA year: 2016

The Harmoniscope is a 20′ tall mysteriously pulsing 9-sided structure that transports participants to another place in space-time. Inside is an 8-sided column containing a reactor core made up of many colorful spiraling acrylic rods, the light from which gets reflected back to the outside of the building and on to the playa. It requires participants to work together to decipher the mystery of how it works, and why it’s here. Participants must decipher an unknown language, illustrated on a Rosetta Stone, using audio/visual cues, a kaleidoscopes and controls to collectively align the reactor core. Once aligned, they will be rewarded with a dramatic sound and lighting event that energizes it, triggering the journey that will bring them to their next destination.
