• Life is a Circus
by: Sandra Bérubé
from: Vancouver, BC, Canada
year: 2023

An elephant is lifted in the air by an airship filled with a flock of birds. A contortionist, hand-balancing on the elephant’s trunk, analyzes the direction to take. The improbable convoy seems ready to take off. Ropes still anchor it to the ground, and red flags are waving in the wind…

Life is a Circus is inspired by the weight of power dynamics and how lines can get blurred between real and fake, safety versus danger. Relationships, money, work, living situations, and mental and physical health can lift us as much as pull us down. Our supports, or ball and chains, often are not who or what we thought they would be. Here is a tribute to fighting to not fall entirely out of balance and find the strength and courage to harness the madness.
• Within the serene depths of a Canadian forest, vertical lines emerge from the trunks of trees, creating a mesmerizing pattern in the heart of the boreal landscape. Each tree trunk bears a dusting of fresh snow, a testament to the crisp chill of winter that has settled upon the woodland. As if wrapped in a blanket of silence, the muted colors of the image evoke a sense of stillness and tranquility.

In this idyllic scene, the coniferous trees stand tall and strong, their snow-laden branches forming a canopy over the forest floor. The pristine, untouched snow beneath the trees complements the stark beauty of the deep woods. The peacefulness of the environment is palpable, as if the remote, frozen forest lines have been carefully arranged by nature herself.

Captured by photographer Duncan Rawlinson in the 1000 Islands region of Ontario, this picturesque winter landscape showcases the seasonal transformation of the North American woods. The snowfall has transformed the woodland into a winter wonderland, with snow-capped pines and icy branches painting a portrait of serene, frosty beauty. Amidst the quiet solitude of the wintry scene, the aligned trees stand as a testament to the natural harmony that can be found within the heart of a remote forest.

The image is an invitation to embrace the peacefulness and tranquility of nature's wintery embrace. As you gaze upon the snow-covered trees and frosty forest floor, let yourself be transported to a place of quiet reflection, where the beauty of the environment soothes your soul and leaves you with a renewed appreciation for the serene wonder of the world around us.
• In this black and white photograph, an organized pattern emerges as trees stand in artificial rows, creating a sense of harmony and tranquility. The stark contrast between the trees and their surroundings highlights the beauty of nature's geometry and evokes a timeless, calming atmosphere.
• Sirsasana - Headstand by Srikanth Guttikonda, Josh Zubkoff, & Looking Up Arts

Rising 30 feet from the playa, Sirsasana is a whimsical inverted tree with its roots reaching for the sky. Its trunk is interwoven wooden arcs based on the golden ratio that form a hyperboloid. The tree’s canopy spreads out on the playa floor with openings that invite participants to explore its intricate inner geometry.

Sirsasana represents the ability to re-learn one’s own nature, the ability to change, to create new perspectives. It was born from a thought experiment that if a human can do Vrksasana, the tree pose in yoga, then can a tree do Sirsasana, a human-centric headstand pose?

Sirsasana’s beautiful radiating geometry will be covered leaf to roots with sentimental details to explore from Srikanth’s childhood home of Hyderabad.
• Marian is Watching 장님이 코끼리 만지는 격이다

I believe the text (in Korean) refers to the parable of the blind men and an elephant.

The parable describes several blind people who each touch a different part of an elephant to learn what it's like. Each one feels a different part (e.g., the trunk, leg, tail) and concludes it's something different (e.g., a snake, tree, rope). The moral of the story (according to the AI that wrote this little write up of the parable): Limited perspectives can lead to incomplete or incorrect understandings.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant

Surely the people who made these posters also have the same limited perspective no? Aren't we all those same blind people with our own little view of what Burning Man is? So many questions! I probably don't know the context here but I feel like this might just be a meme from the Renegade Burn of 2021. I'm all for subversive art just not singling out individuals. Then again the CEO role comes with that. Can you tell I'm conflicted about this?!

 • Methuselah is a 20′ metal sculpture of the world’s oldest tree. The tree’s bark is steel, patinated to blue, brown & white, and seams of glass reveal propane flames within the trunk, reflected in a mirror below. The tree’s roots form benches on which Burners can congregate. Ancestry and evolution are central themes for our work, whose namesake’s rings and branches bore witness to the entire span of recorded human history. Great trees gave their limbs and leaves as axles, paper, bows, hulls and roofs, and held space and time for our ancestors’ radical rituals. Black Rock City contains many altars of dance and ecstasy, and many more of learning and relaxation, but the city provides comparatively few spaces for contemplation and remembrance. Circular spaces, lone trees and eternal flames are all strong ritualistic symbols and joining them in Methuselah helps to dislocate Participants from the frenzy of present day time and re-anchors them in the still time of mythology.
