  • The Self Help Yourself Bookshelf by Brie'Ana Breeze and Crew<br />
<br />
Not just another library on playa, the Self Help Yourself BookShelf has a few surprises in store for for those seeking some dusty enlightenment. Come laugh at the punny titles, but stay to get some wisdom dropped.

  • This photograph captures a serene scene of a man and woman enjoying a quiet moment together, reading outdoors. They are seated at the edge of the Canadian Museum of History in Hull, Quebec, waiting for the Canada Day fireworks to begin. Both individuals are immersed in their paperback books, a testament to the calming power of literature.<br />
<br />
The scene conveys a sense of national pride and Canadian identity, as the couple takes a break from the Canada Day 2018 festivities in Ottawa, Ontario. They sit side by side, each absorbed in their own reading material, demonstrating the simple pleasures of leisurely activities. Surrounded by the peaceful atmosphere of the museum grounds, the pair is a symbol of wholesome urban living and the joy of intellectual pursuits.<br />

  • Emotions without Morals II by Jacob Stelzriede<br />
<br />
An interactive wood robot that had just run out of love. It’s searched the desert for two years for it’s citizens and they haven’t returned. The renew bots have stumbled upon this lonely robot and are giving it one last go to bring it back to life.<br />
<br />
The renew bots are trying they best to figure out the right combination of color and love to bring their giant counter part back to life.<br />
<br />
The piece is a 10 foot interactive metal and wood sculpture with sound activated LED’s and sensors to help bring it to life. There is a control panel with color coded buttons that will help explain how to interact with the sculpture and help the renew bots.

  • I swear Burners are the most badass humans. I was really struggling to get our camp network up and running properly. This was during the transition from the temporary participant network to the main participant netork and I was very lost. I had misconfigured it the setup in several ways and could not unfuck it myself. Low and behold a networking expert visiting our camp so I asked for help. The playa providses. Dan selflessly helped to get us up and running spending many hours with me hacking on configs etc. Here I am, a complete stranger to Dan and he spends a HUGE amount of time helping to get us online. This is the kind of playa gift that makes burning man so great. Burners selflessly helping other Burners without anything or even any expectation of anything in return. The network was immediately put to good use. The Instagrammers were able to start posting right away. Thank goodmess! Gotta keep the dopamine flowing. Seriously though, my campmates and neighbors updated logistics plans and corrdinated with people off playa for replacement parts and you know like more nachos n stuff. Medical phone calls and other family emergencies got sorted out as well with the network. But mostly it was just cat videos. Thank you for helping us Dan. You are an absolute legend!

  • Long View, a polar bear stands in the desert by: Don Kennell and Arctic Burn 505 from: Santa Fe, NM year: 2018<br />
<br />
A 34 foot polar bear made from white car hoods looks across the boundless vista of Black Rock City. The polar bear is an unlikely visitor to the Playa made from materials transformed from another time and place. Manifesting forces of climate change, she is searching for allies. Taking the “Long View” is crucial to survival. Combining content and joy, we ask the viewer to develop a relationship with the animal. Polar bears help humans imagine a faraway place, a place most will never visit. They are uniquely positioned as ambassadors to bring the arctic into human awareness. Animals disappear to make room for our cars. Turning wrecked cars into monumental animals visually reverses this process and impacts the consciousness of the viewer. Contact: arcticburn505@gmail.com

  • Illumina Radiata by Eric Zann and the Illumina Radiata Art Guild<br />
<br />
Six decorative fins acting as both shade structures as well as anchor points will arc upward to buttress a 44 foot tall vertical steel center pole. Radiating out from 3 equidistant sides will hang 3 identical columns of intricately patterned panels and wings, fabricated with bent steel bar and plasma-cut sheet steel. Various patinas and other metal types add texture and color to help define the patterns, designs and motifs that make up the panels. Fine details to appreciate by day will be lit at night by colored LED spotlights to create infinitely variable patterns. Wind-driven outstretched wings will rotate around the center pole, giving the sculpture a kinetic aspect. Flame effects will be at the top, on the wings and on the ground.<br />

  • Evapotrons are devices people build to help deal with graywater by evaporating it. The top portion of this device was spinning around. I'm not sure how well they work. My strategy is to just haul my graywater out and disposing of it correctly. A burner has put some information on these here, not sure if relevant or up to date: https://sites.google.com/site/evapotrons/

  • Truth is Beauty by: Marco Cochrane from: Mill Valley, CA year: 2013<br />
<br />
Truth is Beauty is the second sculpture in a three-part series featuring singer/dancer Deja Solis, the first of which was Bliss Dance (2010). For Truth is Beauty, Deja stands on her toes, head back, arms raised, in an expression of radical self-acceptance and love. She can do this because she is safe. With the female body exposed and demystified you will see past what has been objectified and used to disempower: it’s the feeling, energy, strength, power… the person that remains. These sculptures featuring women safe in the present to express themselves, are meant to help raise consciousness around violence against women, begin a healing process to make room for women’s voices, and ultimately result in a balance of energy that will allow women and men to thrive… My intent is that these sculptures express this healing energy and inspire us to take action; to finally say enough is enough!

  • ReVitalize Toothbrush collective by: Scott London year: 2013<br />
<br />
We are “Revitalize.” Our goal is to bring the collective conciseness of Burning Man to the outside world. We looked at one of the BM Principles, "Leave No Trace" " and are using it to educate kids across the country on the importance of recycling plastic by recycling their TOOTHBRUSH.<br />
<br />
The Toothbrush is an everyday item that many of us forget is often made from plastic. We are asking schools to participate in collecting old used toothbrushes to help us build a communal art project.<br />
<br />
The toothbrush sculpture is a large globe, illustrating plastic is the plaque of the earth. It will look like a colorful large sphere, that once discovered upon the viewer will be shocked to realize it is made from toothbrushes.<br />
Lets use our collective power in putting plastic in its proper place through recycling.<br />

<br />
Island of Lost Buoys<br />
by: Lillian Heyward and The Island of Lost Buoys, a Create Change Project<br />
from: Bluffton, SC<br />
year: 2019<br />
<br />
On the playa is an Island, a wooden tree dominates the center made of recycled pallets, crates and drift wood. Leaves of sculpted plastic bottles rustle in the wind. Strung from a branch is a hammock made of fishing net attached to a ocean buoy marooned on the beach. Hanging from the branches are sea buoys and balls providing a place to write names or leave a message to those who will come after.<br />
<br />
Hanging from branches are bamboo wind chimes that softly clatter in the breeze. It is an island, a refuge, a place of calm and childhood in the stormy seas of life. It appears out of the playa as a mirage, the fantasy playground of youth. Discarded materials transform into an oasis, as our adult lives transform back to childhood. Bangarang!<br />

SkyWhale aims to show that there can be progress and she can help heal and transform the human relationship with Nature. In recognition of the metamorphosis theme, the SkyWhale will embody the transformation of a sea creature to dream that takes to the air. • Burner On Stilts and Truth is Beauty by Marco Cochrane. <br />
<br />
Truth is Beauty by: Marco Cochrane from: Mill Valley, CA year: 2013<br />
<br />

  • This captivating image showcases the common reed (Phragmites australis) in a serene natural setting. The feathery seeds of the common reed plants are illuminated by the soft, backlit sunlight, creating an atmosphere of tranquility.<br />
<br />
The tall grasses gently sway in the breeze, their bristles catching the sunlight and adding to the peaceful ambiance. These reeds play a vital role in maintaining biodiversity and providing bird habitats, while also performing ecological functions such as erosion control, carbon sequestration, and carbon storage.<br />
<br />
The wetlands where the common reed thrives are essential for supporting diverse ecosystems and are often targeted for conservation and restoration efforts. Riparian zones such as these help maintain ecological balance, facilitate seed dispersal, and provide wildlife corridors for the inhabitants of the area.<br />
<br />
However, it is important to note that the common reed can sometimes be an invasive species, causing habitat fragmentation and altering the environmental impact of the area. Despite this, the image serves as a reminder of the beauty and importance of preserving our natural world and its delicate ecosystems.<br />

  • This photo is upside down. This is how Gaudi figured out how to design La Sagrada Familia, by hanging lead weights by string to create perfect curves for the supports...Wikipedia:...Gaudí spent ten years working on studies for the design of La Sagrada Família and developing a new method of structural calculation based on a model built with cords and small sacks of lead shot. The outline of the church was traced on a wooden board (1:10 scale), which was then placed on the ceiling of a small house next to the work site. Cords were hung from the points where columns were to be placed. The sacks of pellets, weighing one ten-thousandth part of the weight the arches would to support, were hung from each catenaric arch formed by the cords. Photographs were then taken of the resulting model from various angles. When the photographs were turned upside-down, the lines of tension formed by the cords and weights revealed the lines of pressure of the compressed structure. This is one of the ways that Gaudí obtained natural forms in his work...The same expressive power of Gaudí's monumental works exists in his oddly graceful chairs and tables. Gaudí's architecture is a total integration of materials, processes and poetics. His approach to furniture design exceeded structural expression and continued with the overall architectural idea.[20]..en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoni_Gaud%c3%ad ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoni_Gaud%c3%ad )

  • Lovely Burner - It was so wonderful to see Steve out there just killin it. Watching Steve interact with Burners who were making photos of themselves in front of the art he (and crew) made was special. He would patiently wait for "his turn" in order to capture shots of he and his brother's piece. The dude literally helped make these incredible pieces of art that other people were using as a backdrop for photos of themselves and he would wait patiently as the light faded. I respect the humility and the art.

  • Brain Drain by Dan Barnes Tinker<br />
<br />
If people are not fighting and hating, make something up to get it started. Drive that wedge between neighbors. Each and every day we are fed mass amounts of information from mass media, social media, and governments. Misinformation, hate, and discourse are the norm.<br />
Maximize the ugliness being fed to the people. Keep any compassion and love to a minimum. Getting along and helping each other is a bad thing. Keep the people in cages and feed them the madness that keeps them hating. ( I missed all the dishes and antennae surrounding this piece. Only noticed them later. Sorry!)

  • Spacecats from: Chicago, IL year: 2016<br />
<br />
Cats and dogs are known to be one of humanity’s best companions. For animal guardians, pets play an important role in their lives. Studies have shown owning a pet helps anxiety, depression, stress, lowers blood pressure, and regulates heart rate. As is true with any relationship, some human-pet relationships are likely to be more rewarding than others. Some people are more attached to their pets than others and those feelings could influence the impact of the pet on the person’s health and life. The rocketship will have engraved writing dedicating this project to all those who has lost a pet and all the cats who have decided to leave us reminding them they are always with us. My hope is that when people discover this installation out in deep playa, they will be touched with this install reminding them of their lost loved ones and providing humor to all the cat lovers.

Mark proceeded to hand me a sticker with his face on it. Which was also amazing and it added to the meta nature of this brief moment. Mark, if you see this your videos helped get us through the pandemic. We love them. Thank you for making them! Google 24 Hours at Burning Man to see Mark’s amazing films.

  • BROKEN 2.0 by Michael Benisty - I was out here shooting and young woman stumbled towards me in tears. She was a complete mess. She was a new burner and had been completely lost in the dust for three hours out in deep playa near the trash fence and she could not figure out how to get back to her camp. She was shaking and weak. She was out of water and having a panic attack. So I gave her water and offered food which she didn't want. I tried to calm her down a little. That wasn't working very well so I kept telling her everything was going to be fine while I dragged her back to her camp. The camp was Feed The Artists if memory serves. After I got some of her campmates' attention they looked after her and gave her the support she needed. She was in good hands so I went back to shooting. She later sent me a text saying how thankful she was that I had helped her. I had almost forgotten how disorienting and scary the dust storms can be for new burners.

  • Firedancer at Methuselah is a 20′ metal sculpture of the world’s oldest tree. The tree’s bark is steel, patinated to blue, brown & white, and seams of glass reveal propane flames within the trunk, reflected in a mirror below. The tree’s roots form benches on which Burners can congregate. Ancestry and evolution are central themes for our work, whose namesake’s rings and branches bore witness to the entire span of recorded human history. Great trees gave their limbs and leaves as axles, paper, bows, hulls and roofs, and held space and time for our ancestors’ radical rituals. Black Rock City contains many altars of dance and ecstasy, and many more of learning and relaxation, but the city provides comparatively few spaces for contemplation and remembrance. Circular spaces, lone trees and eternal flames are all strong ritualistic symbols and joining them in Methuselah helps to dislocate Participants from the frenzy of present day time and re-anchors them in the still time of mythology.
