• Unbound: A Library in Transition (build) by Julia Nelson-Gal

Unbound is a Neoclassical Library clad in deconstructed books representing human creativity and changing thought. Saunter around the building to discover the layered pages of disparate words, illustrations and languages. Surprises fill the walls with secret doors, niches, hidden dioramas, bookshelves and a card cabinet containing objects for the taking. Walk up a few stairs and the floral floors direct you through one of three portals representing the body, the mind, and the soul. Reflect in the mirrored shards that flicker on the walls and represent both the loss of physical information while reflecting back you, the ultimate the creator of the information. Rest inside and listen to readings from others from around the world. Contemplate.
• Pomo by Gregg Fleishman

POMO embodies the structural geometry of the cubic world, more specifically of a 3D checkerboard of cubes expanded to interconnect. The fabric of space. Clustered as a group of five pods with a spire on a pyramidal tiered base it evokes a vessel, perhaps a Genies Bottle? Or is it similar to a pomegranate, an ancient multi-chambered fruit with lots of red seeds? Consisting of fully truncated rhombic dodecahedral pods where the panels are what is left of the faces and the connectors crossing what would be their edges, they include floors and seat backs, and are designed to hold as many people as can fit in or on them, being made from solid birch plywood panels and connecting parts and an engineered LVL lumber frame.
• Pauper's Ballroom by: Pedro Loughran from: Sebastopol, CA year: 2019

A Pauper’s Ballroom is what our parents tell us when walking down to a beach, a clearing or any other beautiful place in nature. A palace free to all. A pauper’s ballroom. The piece is a grand staircase with no second floor, framed by four towers. The way to the ballroom is to climb the staircase, turn around and then descend. The ballroom is the playa but best appreciated through the descent of a staircase, giving you the trappings of grandeur, while being merely pretense to the actual beauty of the free, natural space of the playa. “Nothing” is the absence of substance. It is the void, the infinite unknown. In this way, the “Stairway to Nothing” is the “Stairway to the Void.” Or it’s just the “Stairway to the Playa’s Second Floor.” URL: http://paupersballroom.org Contact: david.nelsongal@gmail.com

 • Paradisium (detail) by Dave Keane and Folly Builders

Paradisium is an interactive grove of geometric trees built primarily out of reclaimed lumber and trees burnt in the CZU Lighting Complex fire in Santa Cruz. An interconnected canopy creates shadow art on the playa floor, and meandering pathways lead to an opening in the center. Climbable trees and various walkways among the canopy will afford elevated perspective. Just like a real forest, the grove will have its seasons and 24-hour cycles. Paradisium provides a space for respite and reflection while fostering a sense of community and an investment in our shared future.
• Upward Spirals of Love by Nick Sullivan, Hannah Natali, Emily Baker, Jordan Layman

The Upward Spirals of Love is an immersive art installation created to showcase the transformative power of love. During the day, the 8 foot iridescent faceted heart projects multi-colored neon green and pink shadows on the playa floor, and at dusk it lights up and comes to life with custom programmed LED patterns that run up the spiral to the heart, giving an effect of an Upward Spiral of Love. As a gift from Nick to his beloved Brigitte, this piece creates a space for people to feel safe, to heal, to connect and to fall in love through the universal language of love. Each of the 5 Love Languages is illuminated in a circle of 5 steel hearts that the visitor can step onto, identifying the type of love that makes them feel the most loved.

 • Sirsasana - Headstand by Srikanth Guttikonda, Josh Zubkoff, & Looking Up Arts

Rising 30 feet from the playa, Sirsasana is a whimsical inverted tree with its roots reaching for the sky. Its trunk is interwoven wooden arcs based on the golden ratio that form a hyperboloid. The tree’s canopy spreads out on the playa floor with openings that invite participants to explore its intricate inner geometry.

Sirsasana represents the ability to re-learn one’s own nature, the ability to change, to create new perspectives. It was born from a thought experiment that if a human can do Vrksasana, the tree pose in yoga, then can a tree do Sirsasana, a human-centric headstand pose?

Sirsasana’s beautiful radiating geometry will be covered leaf to roots with sentimental details to explore from Srikanth’s childhood home of Hyderabad.
• RadiaLumia by: FoldHaus Collective from: Oakland, CA year: 2018

RadiaLumia is a geodesic sphere, five-stories tall, and covered with a breathing skin of origami shells and radiant spikes. Its shape nods to radiolaria, a tiny protozoa with intricate mineral skeletons that covered the desert thousands of years ago, when it was once the sea floor. From the outside, you can see the folds of the shells, made of corrugated polypropylene and illuminated with over 100,000 LEDs. Inside the sphere, a platform offers a place for people to retreat and look out to the surrounding landscape. The shells open and close in response to visitors’ presence, constantly in motion, sometimes protecting the intimate interior of the sphere, sometimes revealing a glimpse of its heart. • Burner Climbing The Catacomb of Veils from: San Francisco, CA year: 2016

Catacomb rises like a rocky outcropping off the desert floor, evoking Black Rock Point itself. It is a ruin of a previous society– a remnant of our collective search for moments of quiet, introspection and reflection. It is a journey of discovery and a descent into a subterranean world.

A path winds up to the Narthex at the eastern Pyramid and from this vantage point, the inward descent begins. Ancient relics of a collective history grace the walls as shafts of light illuminate effigies and offerings. These are moments in our primeval memory, inviting us further downward and inward into ourselves. The journey culminates in an inner sanctum– a sanctuary of veils– a confluence of concealment, revelation and sublime beauty. URL: https://www.facebook.com/CatacombOfVeils

 • Roshanai (Illuminate) by Charles Gadeken from: San Francisco, CA year: 2016

ROSHANAI is a path of enlightenment, shifting colors in static form. Along this corridor, perspective changes and opposites unite. Islamic mathematical art is married to the great Western landscape, serenaded with the voice of your heart and the whisper of the Playa.
ROSHANAI comprises two double-walled panels that create a 108-ft long tunnel of light and sound with a 3-ft corridor. The sides of the hallway rise from 8-ft tall at the ends to 12-ft tall at the apex in the middle. Simultaneously, the panels sink into the ground to form a shallow valley. Fractal arrangements of Islamic geometric patterns are cut into the outside panels, lit from within to illuminate the patterns and cast fantastic night shadows. The entrances will be 16-ft tall gates inspired by the Great Mosque of Isfahan in Iran, pointed arches filled with sacred geometry. The inside walls are smooth and lit in solid colors by daylight-visible LED spotlights embedded in the edges of the floor. URL: http://www.charlesgadeken.com/roshanai

B.Ÿ.T.E. (Burners for Ÿntelligent Technology Emancipation) consists of two monolithic, anthropomorphic microchips representing the very first sentient robots to be freed from slavery, Chip and Terra.
Chip and Terra were first set free to play on the dusty dance floor of deep playa at Black Rock City in 2018. Their virgin year home was one of exploration as they adapted to their newly found liberation.
This year, they hope to enter the imago stage of their evolution and return home to embrace the magical whimsy, radical self expression and symbiotic love as they emerge from their chrysalis and blossom into the colorful, loveable creatures they were always meant to embody.
Head Maze
by: Matthew Schultz and The Pier
from: Reno, NV
year: 2019

The Head Maze is a purposeful juxtapositions of two forms, a peaceful meditative reflection and our inevitable struggle with the nature of cognition; a monolithic mind caught in time between multiple selves. The head towers four stories over the playa floor, encased in mulberry paper and epoxy modeled after the work of Yoshio Ikezaki. The head rests in repose while its left hand claws at its mind fighting to reveal a crystalline stained glass structure akin to the “Space Whale” inside.

A series of hidden doors in the mouth, wrists and head open into a four story, 18 room maze. Each modular room creates a unique space dedicated to the nature of our minds, our struggles with being and the weird and fanciful process of dreaming.
Climbable trees and various walkways among the canopy will afford elevated perspective. Just like a real forest, the grove will have its seasons and 24-hour cycles. Paradisium provides a space for respite and reflection while fostering a sense of community and an investment in our shared future.

 • Mazu Goddess of the Empty Sea from: New Xishi City, Taiwan year: 2015

You walk through the dust and heat of day, beyond the heart of the city, and from the haze before you emerges a shape that is both plant and place, flower and temple, both open and contained. No fence keeps you out, but one hundred and eight lanterns mark out the space, like a fairy ring in the forest, like the hundred and eight beads of the Buddhist rosary.

Through the archway you walk. Up the long, low steps, the muffled sound of your tread meets the familiar clunk of wood; the music of a seaside pier rises from the dust, invoking the sense of some long lost place where water once stretched out to kiss the horizon. Below, the improbable sounds of water and the briefest hints of ocean blue tickle the imagination. From above, eight dragons of fire and steel peer down, watching you, or look out into the distance, waiting.

And again, the thing that is neither quite plant nor place seems to hover at the edge of defining, the green rooftop like a lily pad, the great lotus rising up out of the dried mud and the memory of water, each petal big enough to sleep in, open out from this improbable tree, this pillar of memories.

Inside, past and present blend and dance together. Old rites and new technologies bring fresh form to venerable, ancient practices. There is hidden circuitry here: casting the moon blocks reveals the will of the gods in a panoply of color and light. The breath of dragons explodes outward in answer to prayer. The goddess herself has been known to appear, if the moment is right.

You leave the temple, clutching message and map, and the sound of music finds your ears. Drums, gongs and shouting voices emerge from fantastical shapes, finned and spiny, nautilus-headed dancers and demons with a thousand eyes walk out of the dust, beckoning you to join them. You wonder, for a moment, if you are in fact in a desert, or in the memories of an ancient ocean, seeing the dreams of the sea floor

They hope to fully complete their Metamorphoses.
