• Serpent Mother from: San Francisco, CA year: 2015

The Serpent Mother is a 168′ long sculpture of a skeletal serpent, coiled around her egg. Propane fire runs down her spine, with 41 poofers erupting from the top of her gleaming vertebrae. Reaching 20’ in the air, her hydraulically-actuated head and jaws chomp at the sky.

The serpent is a highly kinetic, participant-controlled installation. Fire effects are a major interactive and sculptural element of the piece, controlled by pushing buttons located on the ribs. The audience is invited to direct her movements, using controls that move the head and jaws, effectively making each show a unique event created by the participants.

Twice every evening, the operator crew will perform methanol shows, shooting multi-colored flames 40′ in the air from the egg, illuminating the night sky. URL: http://flaminglotus.com/art/the-serpent-mother/ Contact: info@flaminglotus.com

 • This black and white photograph captures the Thousand Islands Bridge in Ontario, Canada, during a serene evening. The calm waters below reflect the illuminated bridge, creating a mirror-like effect. The bridge's lights create a dazzling star pattern due to the optical artifacts, adding a touch of magic to the image. The peaceful scene showcases the beauty of the St. Lawrence River and the architectural wonder of this iconic Canadian landmark. The tranquil image invites viewers to pause and appreciate the stillness of the night, the glimmering lights, and the vast expanse of the river landscape.
• La Victrola from: Oakland, CA year: 2016

La Victrola is a 35 ft tall Art Nouveau gramophone. Around its base is a fully immersive turn-of-the-century cabaret featuring the live music and performances from another era. During daytime hours, La Victrola will play the old time music of crackly old 78s to all who cross its path. Each evening, the cafe tables and lounges will be filled by the audience and performers will grace its stage. On a playa dominated by digital technology and music, La Victrola offers a counterpoint of jazz, blues, bluegrass, classical, and vaudeville that formed the foundations of what we hear today. The abstract image evokes feelings of solitude and serenity, highlighting the subtle yet powerful presence of nature in even the most simplistic of scenes. Photographer Duncan Rawlinson skillfully uses contrast and texture to draw the viewer's eye to the quiet strength and resilience of these delicate forms against the frozen landscape.
by: David Oliver and the Art City Monsters
from: Ventura, CA
year: 2019

A Portal possible of transformation… not to that which is coming, but to things here. With a ring 12′ in diameter made from 4,608 stained glass tiles with a total of 24 colors, graduating the color wheel in a flowing mosaic that is two sided. Two 7-thousand-pound basalt stone columns stand guard from the left and from the right. Portal will also be lit with an increasing laser light show controlled on a theremin device, with sound effects that go off when one enters.

Symbiosis.

The color in harmony attracts vitality through beauty, like a flower does a bee. The bee gets food in exchange for spreading pollen. In the same manner one attracts to Portal. Coming out with powerful frequencies, to bounce off their friends, their family, the animals, EARTH, and even so called… “enemies.”
I asked to take their photo and they were friendly and wanted to play. He said "the last time I shot photos at Burning Man was for National Geographic". Love it! This little fun interaction gets seared into my brain and this little moon art car gets photographed from now on.

 • HaHa... by: Laura Kimpton with Jeff Schomberg from: Reno, NV year: 2018

HaHa… is a celebration of life. With the loss of Larry, Dana, DJ, Ken, Laura’s brother and other burners , we want to take a moment to celebrate the time we had with them. To raise our proverbial glass in celebration to all they did to create this wonderful, joyful life we have as part of Burning Man. While we feel their losses keenly, mourn their parting from this physical life, we know that they, and Larry in particular, liked to revel in the moment, seize the day, and share laughter and fun whenever and wherever possible. Even in the darkest moments, the darkest times, we need to cling to this remembrance of joy and laughter. This sculpture is a reminder, a touchstone, and a celebration.

 • Church Trap by: Rebekah Waites from: lakewood, CA year: 2013

Church Trap is an interactive wonderland for the religiously rebellious. A large-scale decaying church, tipped on its axis like a box trap. Not only does it push participants to ask the question “why”, but it also invites the daring to take control of the many interactive features. A tricked out church organ, part central LED nervous system, part beautifully wicked installation art. It is your God. Or, are you its? Whatever the answer, play at your own risk. Feeling even more daring? Why not put your spiritual and religious beliefs to test by playing The Machine – an 80’s style upright video game. It might want to play “pulpit”, but it’s all “confessional”. URL: http://www.churchtrap.com Contact: rebekart@yahoo.com

#TILT
year: 2019

Inspired by surreal photographs by French artist Philippe Ramette, TILT allows you to see the world differently. Not only participants who interact with TILT by stepping onto the balcony shift their perspective. Even observers are intuitively and playfully urged to act to make sense of contradictory visuals. What is real and what is fake? What does it take to change reality?
Inspired by surreal photographs by French artist Philippe Ramette, TILT allows you to see the world differently. Not only participants who interact with TILT by stepping onto the balcony shift their perspective. Even observers are intuitively and playfully urged to act to make sense of contradictory visuals. What is real and what is fake? What does it take to change reality?
Portal
by: David Oliver and the Art City Monsters
from: Ventura, CA

• This is as close as I got to making a photograph of the train wreck. I was there about 10 minutes early but the scene was such chaos that I couldn't even move. People we're pushing me and with all my gear it was impossible. It was aboslute chaos around the permiter here. Sorry folks. • I ran into a burner here who has a net worth over $50 Billion according to that crazy Forbes list. He was by far the wealthiest person I've ever met. There was a group of about 10 burners around and nobody knew who he was but I recognized him immediately. I nervously introduced myself thinking he would be some kind of time traveller or really mean to me. Turns out he was super friendly and his main concern was finding interactive art pieces for his children to explore because they had to go back to school soon. You know like completely normal stuff. Everyone puts their pants on the same way... If even you're one of the top 20 wealthiest people out of 7.7 Billion. It was a real treat to meet him after reading about their business. • FloBot by: Jessica Levine from: South Lake Tahoe, CA year: 2018

FloBot is an interactive flower-like steel sculpture with a character all her own. She will stand on exposed roots as she evolves into a blossomed being. People will be able to climb up the roots and “get inside her head” bouncing and rocking with the use of large suspension springs. Flo represents the notion of learning to flow with all of the parts of one’s self, and finding strength within them. Her roots correlate with all of the deepest parts of ourselves–the buried parts, which make us who we are. Exposing the roots and making them a part of the blossom at the top represents the idea that everything is an integral part of the whole self, even (and especially) the buried parts–not just the pretty flowery surface parts. • In this photograph, dead trees stand solemnly amidst a vast field of yellow, dry grass. The scene evokes a sense of desolation and decay, yet there is an undeniable beauty in the contrast between the lifeless trees and the sun-drenched landscape. The golden hues of the grass create a serene and tranquil atmosphere, while the stark, skeletal branches of the trees serve as a poignant reminder of the harsh reality of drought and arid conditions. As one gazes upon this image, it is impossible not to feel a deep sense of connection to the resilience of nature and its ability to withstand the passage of time. This powerful photograph is a testament to the haunting beauty that can be found even in the most desolate corners of the world.
• This playful photograph captures a lighthearted moment between two friends, as one man bends down to snap a photo of the other. The scene is framed by a narrow window at the back of an RV, giving the image a unique and quirky feel. The casual, spontaneous nature of the interaction is evident, showcasing the bond between the two men and their shared love for adventure and laughter. The carefully composed shot features an unconventional perspective that emphasizes the humor and oddity of the situation. It's a delightful reminder of the joy and fun that can be found in even the most unexpected places during life's journey.
• I swear Burners are the most badass humans. I was really struggling to get our camp network up and running properly. This was during the transition from the temporary participant network to the main participant netork and I was very lost. I had misconfigured it the setup in several ways and could not unfuck it myself. Low and behold a networking expert visiting our camp so I asked for help. The playa providses. Dan selflessly helped to get us up and running spending many hours with me hacking on configs etc. Here I am, a complete stranger to Dan and he spends a HUGE amount of time helping to get us online. This is the kind of playa gift that makes burning man so great. Burners selflessly helping other Burners without anything or even any expectation of anything in return. The network was immediately put to good use. The Instagrammers were able to start posting right away. Thank goodmess! Gotta keep the dopamine flowing. Seriously though, my campmates and neighbors updated logistics plans and corrdinated with people off playa for replacement parts and you know like more nachos n stuff. Medical phone calls and other family emergencies got sorted out as well with the network. But mostly it was just cat videos. Thank you for helping us Dan. You are an absolute legend!
