• This photograph by Duncan Rawlinson masterfully blends the stark beauty of the desert with a digital tapestry of imaginative crystal formations amongst saguaro cacti. Utilizing a unique combination of photography and AI technology, Duncan creates a surreal landscape where crystalline structures mirror the natural forms of these iconic cacti. Vibrant hues and light reflections dance across the composition, illustrating a harmonious fusion of organic and synthetic artistry. The work prompts viewers to explore the interplay between nature's designs and human creativity, blurring the lines between the living and the inanimate. The resulting image is not just a serene desert scene but a thought-provoking reflection on the synergy of nature and technology.
• In 'Desert Spheres: Balance and Ephemera', Duncan Rawlinson masterfully captures the dance between natural desolation and orchestrated serenity. Floating orbs converse with the enduring desert twigs, offering a glimpse into a world where the laws of nature are both revered and playfully defied.
• Consumption by Tom Boughner and the Desert Propaganda Collective

Consumption is a 45′ tall sculpture in the shape of a dollar sign ($) assembled from discarded household appliances (washers, dryers, fridges, stoves, etc). Ninety appliances are layered and stacked to create the “S” of the dollar sign.

Consumption brings our focus to the end of the era of consumerism and overconsumption. Our current trajectory is no longer sustainable and we must change. Reflect upon the mountain of waste to guide our beliefs, ideas and spirits to a more rational use of earth’s limited resources.

We all play a part in the chain of excess that starts with raw materials and ends in landfills and oceans. Many factors tie us to our throw-away society. We are driven to
overconsumption.
• Desert Guard by: Lu Ming from: Beijing, China year: 2018

Fenghaizhen’s design is inspired by the armor of Genghis Khan whose Mongolian empire ruled China during a part of the 14th century. The Mongolian army resisted their enemies’ aggression thanks to Genghis Khan’s military tactics, a strong system of weapons and their special armor. It had a very primitive but effective shock absorbing and impact diverting system. This art piece enlarges the armor to a height of 15 metres weighing 10 tons and embedded the soul of a Mongolian warrior. It wants to remind everyone, that we must never use artificial intelligence for war. Otherwise, humanity creates weapons that kill us. We hope that this warrior makes us realise that we shouldn’t only worship technology, but also put restrictions in place. Contact: beijingburners@gmail.com

 • In this captivating photograph taken at Burning Man 2015, we are transported to a surreal world where the desert night comes to life. Under the starry sky, the iconic El Pulpo Mechanico, a fire-breathing mechanical octopus, stretches its luminescent tentacles as it stands tall amidst the Playa. To its side, the Storied Haven, an eclectic and whimsical structure, emanates an air of mystery and enchantment. In the background, the Temple of Promise stands as a sacred space for contemplation and connection. Bathed in the soft glow of lanterns and flame effects, these three awe-inspiring art installations create a harmonious and otherworldly scene that captures the essence of Burning Man's spirit of creativity, collaboration, and human connection.
• Since its inception in 1999, the Pinhole Project has been a standout presence at Burning Man. A group of dedicated photographers, they employ the age-old technique of pinhole photography to capture the essence of the festival. Their choice of equipment is fascinating: they use 12 cameras made from 50-gallon cardboard barrels, designed to expose 30 x 40-inch sheets of gelatin silver paper.

In the midst of the desert, they've set up a makeshift darkroom within a shipping container. Each year, they produce about a hundred photos, offering a unique, almost ethereal view of the festivities, which are then showcased around the playa.

Black Rock City, Nevada, undergoes a magical transformation each summer. Thousands flock to this barren desert, turning it into a vibrant hub for artists, dancers, and free spirits. Among them is the Pinhole Project team. Originating from the simple desire of four festival-goers in 1999, this initiative has since evolved in both its technical prowess and its role in the Burning Man community.

What makes pinhole photography so compelling, especially in such a dynamic environment, is its ability to capture a unique stillness amidst chaos. For many, it answers questions about the nature of documenting experiences at Burning Man. The overarching goal of the Pinhole Project? To give attendees a different lens through which to view the raw creativity and radical self-expression that defines this iconic event.
• Cactus of Life. A Mirror of truth. Awaken your true self by David Lombrozo, Tania Ordoñez, Pablo Fernandez and Humberto Wong
from: México City, México
year: 2023

Cactus of Life is a sculptural piece that offers a glimpse inside of oneself. The Mexican traditional Tree of Life and the iconic cactus come together as one. Here all are welcome to see themselves as they are, no prejudice. By doing so, all can share a better version of their self with the world.

The first symbol comes from the Mexican artisan tradition of the “Tree of Life.” Made of clay, this tree is adorned with many figures related to different themes such as the sun and the moon.

The second symbol is a cactus, the desert plant that survives harsh conditions and welcomes all beings who come to find life. Cacti also contain psychedelic properties that help the recipient to see inside themselves.
• As the sun dips below the horizon, the desert landscape transforms into a canvas of digital artistry. Vivid hues of purple and bronze dance across the dunes, tracing the elegant undulations of sand and space. These radiant lines resemble a futuristic interpretation of nature, where light itself seems to be both the artist and the medium. In the stillness of the desert evening, this image captures a fleeting moment where day and night converge, wrapped in a mesmerizing glow. The landscape, usually dominated by sun and shade, now flaunts a neon spectacle that echoes the beauty of the cosmos, as if the very stars had descended to grace the earthly sands. This scene isn't just a display of colors; it's a transient, glowing anthem to the beauty that flourishes in the embrace of dusk and darkness.

 • In the twilight hour at Arches National Park, the sandstone landscape comes to life with an enchanting blend of pastel colors. The scene is a testament to the beauty of the American Southwest, where adventure and natural wonders abound. The arid landscape, shaped by the forces of erosion and geomorphology, showcases an array of geological marvels and majestic rock formations.

The picture captures the essence of outdoor adventure, as the park's hiking trails and canyonlands beckon visitors to explore its vastness. The sandstone formations, painted with hues of red, orange, and magenta, create a captivating backdrop to the desert landscape.

The scene serves as a reminder that, in life and photography alike, one must remain aware, ready, and actively seeking the unexpected. By staying open to new perspectives and experiences, we can uncover the hidden beauty that might otherwise go unnoticed.

This photograph highlights the importance of embracing the unexpected, as it showcases the natural beauty of Arches National Park beyond its most famous attractions. With its stunning views and tranquil atmosphere, the image is a celebration of nature's artistic mastery in shaping the arid landscapes of the American Southwest.
• BitCube by Colin O'Donnell (Build Week)
from: San Francisco, CA
year: 2023

BitCube is an interactive installation that transforms 224 standard IBC water totes into single pixels in a massive low-resolution cube display towering 30 feet over the desert. The installation creates a minimalist, abstract visual narrative that defies the ubiquity of hi-res displays. BitCube embraces the limitations of a low-res medium and encourages viewers to find beauty in simplicity. The installation’s audio-reactive capabilities reflect the collective heartbeat of the Burning Man community. Light patterns range from abstract shapes to minimalist representations of life and energy, resonating with Burning Man’s spirit of creativity, self-expression, and community in a stripped-down interplay of light, space, and perception.
As participants gather around “Mona,” they engage to have deep connection between each other. At night, illuminated by lights, the pink rabbit becomes a recognizable landmark. The artwork aims to transport Burners into a whimsical world, reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, where the rabbit guides them on a journey filled with hope, inclusiveness, and freedom.

Black Rock Station is a classic rural train station built in the mid-1930s to serve Black Rock City and the communities scattered throughout the vast Black Rock Desert. • Cactus of Life. A Mirror of truth. Awaken your true self by David Lombrozo Tania OrdoñezPablo Fernandez and Humberto Wong
from: México City, México

Cacti also contain psychedelic properties that help the recipient to see inside themselves.
from: Oakland, CA
year: 2023

Mother (Superior) is an optical illusion, ripples of light reflected in the hot desert air. She consists of a series of rotating, reflective, stainless steel stems.
Each stem is made of a bent steel tube, rotating and centered upon steel plates as bases. Her poles are bent to create organic, asymmetrical shapes; these create a pattern of disruption along the horizon line. With all her arms moving, Mother (Superior) will be Black Rock City’s first three-dimensional, moving mirage.
This 50′ tall collective tapestry illustrating a world on fire stands as one of the largest & most vivid works at Burning Man, transforming shape by desert winds and participant interaction.

By day, the work depicts a fiery landscape, sparking reflection of our climate reality. At night, a serene scene illuminates in light, inspiring waking dreams of a hope-filled future.

Participants are able to swing from the base of the tapestry and experience the sensation of “the world on their shoulders,” witnessing the ripple effect of their actions displayed on a monumental scale.
Loosely based on desert plants this sculpture strives to understand and recreate the forces of nature. The piece is very industrial in appearance with the sheer steel facade and plastic bubbling light fixtures, and so, the elements of nature are represented by the gradual shift in color of the light and the ever persistent shrieks and thumps of the sound. Just like the vibrations of life, this sculpture’s life force will pulse through it in a slow and melodic manner. The piece, although beautiful during the day, is dormant, only coming to life as the sun sets each night. People are inevitably be drawn to these representations of energy forces and so the sculpture and its surrounding environment will inevitably become a serene social space.
As the name “1000 Hands” suggests, over 500 participants co-created this artwork, forming a community for whom the process was equally as important as the final product.
• BitCube by Colin O'Donnell
from: San Francisco, CA

• There Will Be Mud - Mona by Miao He
from: Shehong, China
year: 2023

“Mona” is an 8-meter tall metal rabbit sculpture, resembling a plush toy with a pink exterior, standing gracefully in the desert landscape. Representing the theme of ANIMALIA, the installation serves as a symbol of love, warmth, and childhood memories.
• This atmospheric photograph captures an abandoned well drill rig and truck, left to the elements on Hartnet Road in Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. The rusty machinery, riddled with bullet holes, tells a story of a bygone era, as it stands as a decaying monument to the passage of time. The contrast between the man-made structures and the rugged natural beauty of the desert creates a captivating scene, inviting viewers to ponder the history of this forsaken machinery and the stories it could tell.
• I had this song blasting at full volume as we quietly entered the city at slow speed. Windows down. The magic awaits. As an aside, it's notable that you don't see people drive fast on gate road during build week. They know you go slow. https://open.spotify.com/track/52OzHDL7QSF8ag7N16B8wt

 • Farmer the Rigger by Zulu Heru & the Burger Boyz (Build Week)
from: Los Angeles, CA
year: 2023

Farmer the Rigger is a giant Afro-eccentric magical entity made of weathered steel, supported by his hands that he uses to traverse the playa when it is dusty enough to do so undetected. Farmer the Rigger is a monument to the working class, skilled laborers, and the culmination of hours spent mastering one’s craft. Farmer the Rigger is a guardian, watching over this safe space we collectively create for all beings especially people of color to express them selves freely and to be celebrated for doing so.
Temple of the Heart is a vessel for reconnecting with our hearts and a space for communal healing. Holding space for anyone processing grief, She helps channel it up to the sky. • Burden of The Beast by Walker Babington
from: New Orleans, LA
year: 2023

“Burden of The Beast,” is a fantastical folk art sculpture depicting a bison with a house at its torso. It symbolizes the task of relocating one’s intrinsic understanding of ‘home.’

Both the bison & the house are made with materials from New Orleans structures which have been destroyed by climate disasters, as though the pieces of a fallen home had the sentience and will to collect what could be salvaged, stand up, and head toward higher ground.
