• Eternal Return by: Peter Hudson from: San Francisco, CA year: 2014

Zoetropes are remarkably qualified to portray the cyclical nature of life. I have been blessed with the opportunity to explore this timeless theme through diverse cultures and eras. In brief three-second loops I have been able to explore some of the most timeless tales that transcend culture.
The concept of the eternal return is touched upon in virtually all cultural and religious narratives. The concept can be found in Ancient Egyptian, Mayan and Aztec beliefs, in East Indian, and ancient Greek philosophy, as well as the 19th century deliberations of Friedrich Nietzsche. Tibetan Buddhism’s Bhavacakra is a symbolic representation of samsara, or “cyclic existence”

The concept of the eternal return speculates that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form, an infinite number of times across infinite time and/or infinite space. Contact: peter@hudzo.com

 • Freedom Trident by Donata Aukstuolis and Efka

This ancient symbol is believed to have originated as a tribal symbol, a synthesis of the divine elements of fire and water in the manifested world. The wisdom embedded in trident is universal. Three points, three worlds, and trinities are ever-present in human mythology and culture. Today, a trident is a symbol of unity and freedom out of which all the planes of existence emerge and collapse into. A symbol of perseverance and determination, a symbol of a fight for freedom and democracy.
• The Midnight Museum of That One Time at Burning Man
by Jerry Snyder

The Midnight Museum will be 25 faux stained-glass lanterns depicting artworks, events, and people of significant interest within Burning Man culture. Each lantern will be a box 3′ tall and 2′ wide on a 3′ high stand. Each will consist of a wood box housing a faux stained-glass panel on each vertical face. Each lantern will be lit from within and will be topped with a light pole. On the top of each pole will be an LED beacon that will display a variety of enticing colors designed to draw viewers in from across the playa. At the base of each pole will be a button that, if pressed and held down, will cause the beacon to dim. The lanterns will be arranged in a regular square grid with the lanterns 6′ apart on center.

 • One of the best parts of Burning Man culture is the conversations you have with people you don't normally get to hang with. I learn so much out there every year. There are so many people who are just downright smarter and better than me as humans. I try to learn from them. - https://Duncan.co/Burning-Man-2021

 • BEBOT by: Andrea Greenlees, Andy Tibbetts and Josh Haywood from: Surbiton, Surrey, England year: 2018

BEBOT is a cute, friendly, thirty-five foot tall steel robot that invites Burners to climb up into its interior and ‘BE My Eyes’, ‘BE My Ears’, ‘BE My Voice’, ‘BE My Beating Heart’. An endearing comic book robot built on a huge scale but undeniably cute, this installation is intended primarily for play but conceptually it explores aspects of robotics that should concern us. ‘Cuteness’ is already the dominant aesthetic of digital culture and features heavily in robot design. Cuteness triggers in us a desire to approach and engage with the cute object. Emotional engineering of robots lowers our barriers to privacy and clouds our perception of risk. BEBOT’s forked devil’s tail suggests that all may not be as innocent and harmless as it seems. Contact: andrea@hylemo.com

 • La Victrola by: La Victrola Society from: Oakland, CA year: 2017

La Victrola is a 30-foot tall wood and steel sculpture celebrating the music of a bygone era. Built by a community of volunteer artists at American Steel Studios in Oakland California, its period details,
musical curation, and live performances stand as organic counterpoints to modern digital culture. La Victrola entertains and educates the public by playing crackly forgotten recordings from the early 1900s, a time of great innovation in jazz, blues, bluegrass, and country & western. On select evenings, La Victrola’s cabaret stage hosts period appropriate vaudeville and music performances transporting participants back in time.

 • Ascension by: Crimson Collective from: Los Angeles, CA year: 2017

In the Japanese culture the Crane is seen as a symbol of peace, luck, prosperity and health. It is believed that if you fold a thousand origami cranes, the universe will grant you a wish. We chose to build a giant crane (Coco) in the style and tradition of origami; so wherever it went it would bring with it the spirit and the energy of peace and wellness.

Ascension (Coco), is a 150 ft wide and 45 ft tall giant white origami crane made of aluminum truss, white fabric, and tension wire. The aluminum structure is modular, making the crane a temporary installation, but completely mobile. The 100+ components and over 7000 sf of 80% mesh texilene sunshade material, that make up the crane, can be dismantled and shipped in one 40 ft shipping container.

 • Tulpa Ashrams
by: One Art Museum
from: Peking, China
year: 2019

TULPA ASHRAMS is a tower group represents the fusion of senses. Tulpa is a concept in mysticism and the paranormal of a being or object which is created through spiritual or mental powers. It was adapted by 20th century theosophists from Tibetan: སྤྲུལ་པ་ which means “emanation” or “manifestation”.

Emerging from a study into the geometry of Chinese art and architecture, the tower group references motifs and elements traditionally found in Tibetan Buddhism, chanting music, sacred places, and daily objects though in itself.

Tulpa Ashrams has ties to no religion. It transcends time and space, memories and culture. They are chaotic eons of the past and a distant future of the unknown.
• Dancers at Resolute Arch by: Richard Rhodes, Sculptor from: Seattle, WA year: 2018

The Resolute Arch is conceived as gathering place and high-impact landmark on the horizon. it’s intended to start a conversation, draw the viewer towards an unexpected conclusion and experience. Appearing broken and hanging inexplicably in place, the mind-altering assembly of stone challenges our perception of what we think we know, thought we understood. The sculpture is fundamentally an open symbol. The break in the form demands attention, presenting the shifting dualities of continuity and rupture, menace and security, unbidden fear and unearned trust. It is both heavy and light, impossible, yet it stands, challenging our perceptions. Timeless and transient, the stone arch stands in contrast to our disposable culture. • SACRA
by: Kirsten Berg
from: Berkeley, CA/Bali, Indonesia
year: 2019

Sacra is a totemic gateway, symbolizing a pivotal point between infinite and finite. The sacrum (= ‘holy bone’) is the first gateway through which we metamorphize from space to substance, into the wordly realm. It is also the last bone that disintegrates, holding ritual significance in ancient cultures, as a reminder of the past and future passage that we all share. Sacra’s focal point is a ‘sacral object’, embedded with convex mirrors reflecting our shared cellular origins; a bowed gate like a funnel for source into form; a silhouette echoing Japanese torii gates, which traditionally indicate a passage between the profane/worldly plane to the sacred. “Sacra” mirrors that journey, literally and poetically, in reverse and also ‘in between’.
