  • Shewolf<br />
by: Chris Mack<br />
from: Monterey, CA<br />
year: 2019<br />
<br />
The Shewolf is nature, constantly giving and directing our growth for thousands of years. Only recently has man conquered nature by what we think is a smart and clever manipulation for our benefit. “What nature can do, man can do better.”<br />
<br />
Or can we? Has man depleted our mother or is she still willing to nurture us? Come out and drink from the elixir from nature’s breasts. Lay in her shadow, protected from harm.<br />
<br />
Shewolf now has a partner wolf. Can he keep up? Can we keep up?<br />

  • Taking Flight by: Nicki Adani from: Mill Valley, CA year: 2019<br />
<br />
Nicki Adani’s “Taking Flight” emboldens visitors to be who they truly are, inspiring them to leave behind what is holding them back. A 10-foot tall feminine bird-like figure, welded from raw steel rods and tubes, her wings spread wide, takes flight from her perch upon a 10-foot tall spoked wheel, representing the circle of life. Viewers interact by making colorful ropes and weaving them into the wheel as a metaphor of releasing one’s past. Experiences already lived through can’t be erased, but they can speak their truths, and be let go. In the process, individuals can connect to their inner strength allowing them to spread their wings to fly free.<br />

  • Skywhale: The Not ShyWhale by: Blake Marcus, Chris Welch, Seven from: Amherst, MA year: 2019<br />
<br />
The SkyWhale is a life sized flying technicolor whale and she will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder within all who see, touch, and listen to the piece as she arrives into the dusty desert. She strives to open the possibility of using the sky as a 3-dimensional medium for art. In nature, water creatures live in a place physically below that of terrestrial humans, and they have been downstream of many harmful human activities. SkyWhale aims to show that there can be progress and she can help heal and transform the human relationship with Nature. In recognition of the metamorphosis theme, the SkyWhale will embody the transformation of a sea creature to dream that takes to the air. • THEM by Simón Malvaez and Brenden Darby<br />
<br />
THEM invites participants to enter it and identify with the art-making the sculpture into THEM. Through community interactions and the people around us can the sculpture be transformed into new faces. At night those new faces are then expressed upon the playa in shadows created from an internal light. To explore the different personalities of “THEM”, one must generate commitment as part of the change, and this participation can be done alone but it is much easier to do with the support of a community. The sculpture will act as a meeting point for observation, contemplation, and self-discovery.<br />

  • Sirsasana - Headstand by Srikanth Guttikonda, Josh Zubkoff, & Looking Up Arts<br />
<br />
Rising 30 feet from the playa, Sirsasana is a whimsical inverted tree with its roots reaching for the sky. Its trunk is interwoven wooden arcs based on the golden ratio that form a hyperboloid. The tree’s canopy spreads out on the playa floor with openings that invite participants to explore its intricate inner geometry.<br />
<br />
Sirsasana represents the ability to re-learn one’s own nature, the ability to change, to create new perspectives. It was born from a thought experiment that if a human can do Vrksasana, the tree pose in yoga, then can a tree do Sirsasana, a human-centric headstand pose?<br />
<br />
Sirsasana’s beautiful radiating geometry will be covered leaf to roots with sentimental details to explore from Srikanth’s childhood home of Hyderabad.<br />

  • Chilopod by: Lawrence Grown, Embrio LLC from: Berkeley, CA year: 2018<br />
<br />
The Chilopod [ky-lo-pod] is an interactive insect-like structure, an example of a “building-as-living-organism.” Daytime: Participants can climb the spine ladder, and slide down to the tail. An internal soundscape conveys breathing, and whale-like song. The Chilopod responds to human speech with its other-worldly insect-like voice. Nighttime: Exterior lights evoke a living skin. When the Chilopod hears music from nearby art cars, its lights morph and pulse to the beat, like a chameleon floating through a sea of sound. Participants can touch node points to immediately change the lighting patterns, and explore further interaction. Inside the legs appear as ribs, and the lights convey the inner workings of the organism’s heartbeat and breathing. URL: https://www.chilopod.life/ Contact: chilopod1@gmail.com

  • Kinesios by: ND Collective from: Nashville, TN year: 2018<br />
<br />
Kinesios is an imposing steel colossus formed by two internally lit vertical steel planes set parallel to each other. Perforated with a binary code on one side and a chaotic pattern on the other side the two planes support a hanging sculpture that participants can swing by synchronizing their body movements, cooperation is the key. The internal lighting is affected by the pendulum’s movement, the higher the motion, the greater the pulsation, frequency, and synchronization of the lighting. It is a piece of contrast and conflict. Man vs. machine, order vs. chaos, a binary limitations vs. freethinking existence. By putting the human spirit in the center, mankind is the activator, only we can be the solution to our own creation. URL: https://www.ndcollective.net Contact: brad@norrisarchitecture.com

  • Island of Lost Buoys and Skywhale: The Not ShyWhale<br />
<br />
<br />
Island of Lost Buoys<br />
by: Lillian Heyward and The Island of Lost Buoys, a Create Change Project<br />
from: Bluffton, SC<br />
year: 2019<br />
<br />
On the playa is an Island, a wooden tree dominates the center made of recycled pallets, crates and drift wood. Leaves of sculpted plastic bottles rustle in the wind. Strung from a branch is a hammock made of fishing net attached to a ocean buoy marooned on the beach. Hanging from the branches are sea buoys and balls providing a place to write names or leave a message to those who will come after.<br />
<br />
Hanging from branches are bamboo wind chimes that softly clatter in the breeze. It is an island, a refuge, a place of calm and childhood in the stormy seas of life. It appears out of the playa as a mirage, the fantasy playground of youth. Discarded materials transform into an oasis, as our adult lives transform back to childhood. Bangarang!<br />

  • Love's Hug<br />
by: Anna Mok<br />
from: Palo Alto & San Francisco, CA<br />
year: 2019<br />
<br />
Love’s Hug rises from the desert as a protected space where one can be extrospective and introspective. It will invoke individual and collective reflections and thoughtful dialogue of the love, happiness and joy that humans create for ourselves and each other.<br />
<br />
Love’s Hug invites us to take a rest from the chaos, share an embrace, cuddle with others and be engulfed by human love and warmth in this safe place where we can (re)connect with our own hearts and those of others around us. These connections allow us to remember the limitless powers of the human heart and is a catalyst for transformations.<br />

  • Jamen Percy - This is what an absolute legend looks like. Jamen was just kicking ass out there. Jamen was not only contributing wonderful photographs, he was shooting video, gigapans, hyperlapses, and making radical gifts. Not to mention the incredible costume. Jamen was even a great campmate. It has been a pleasure to get to know you and spend fleeting moments together when neither of us are shooting. Jamen is a legit badass. I can't say enough good things about Jamen. If anyone in the ORG happens to see this, please support Jamen in whatever capacity possible. Jamen is hard working, respectful, and extremely talented. Doin it right if you will. Check out Jamen's website for incredible Burning Man images. <a href="https://www.jamenpercy.com/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.jamenpercy.com/</a> As an aside, Jamen and I were flying drones with the correct permissions at Burning Man this year. We both had to travel internationally to take our FAA Part 107 certification and were given permission to fly by the wonderful BRC Safety Team. If you were flying drones this year without permission you were doing it wrong. Like the guy I stopped from flying during the temple burn over the crowd. Like really man?! Yikes. Please contact me or the ORG and I can point you in the right direction for requesting permission to fly drones at Burning Man. It's not simple to fly safely.

  • BORiNG Sign Camp BORiNG<br />
<br />
Inspired by vintage Las Vegas casino signs and a healthy sense of irony, the BORiNG sign is an 18-ft tall, 20-ft long reminder to never take one’s self too seriously. The sign is made out of reclaimed sheet metal and discarded letters from dismantled corporate signs, hand painted, lit by 300 LED bulbs and securely attached to a welded base with wheels (and sometimes, pedal-power). The piece is fully mobile across the playa. You can usually find the BORiNG sign accompanying burns, alongside popular art projects, and framing the silhouette of the Man at sunset. With four 500-watt speakers and a playlist of danceables from the 60s, 70s and 80s, the mobile, rolling sign often attracts an entourage of sunset or late night boogie revellers.

That's because the horizon is not flat and the sun dips below the horizon at slightly different times. As you can see the shadow of the horizon here.

  • Galaxia by: Arthur Mamou-Mani from: London, United Kingdom year: 2018<br />
Galaxia celebrates hope in the unknown, stars, planets, black holes, the movement uniting us in swirling galaxies of dreams. A superior form of Gaia in Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, Galaxia is the ultimate network, the fabric of the universe connecting living beings into one entity.<br />
Galaxia is shaped of 20 timber trusses converging as a spiral towards one point in the sky. The triangular trusses form dierent paths towards a central space holding a giant 3D printed mandala, the heart of Galaxia. The timber modules start large enough to hold small alcoves in which people can write in peace. As participants walk through the path, the timber modules lift up and become thinner and thinner towards the sky as people reach the central mandala.<br />

  • Temple of Promise from: San Francisco Bay Area, CA year: 2015<br />
<br />
A Temple’s purpose is to provide a safe space where the diverse and essential needs of the soul can take root and grow or surrender and find solace. This year, the Temple of Promise welcomes participants through an archway soaring 97 feet overhead. Once inside, the structure curves in on itself, tapering in width and height down to just 7 feet tall. Along the way, alcoves formed by the supporting arches, as well as wooden sculptures reminiscent of stones in a stream, create altars and semi-private spaces for individuals and smaller gatherings. The lines of the curved wooden walls draw the eye inward and create a canvas for written messages and mementos. As the path continues to curve, it opens into the contemplative altar and the heart of the Temple: a grove of three sculpted trees. The branches are initially bare. Participants will write messages on long strips of cloth and attach them to the trees, creating the gentle shade of Weeping Willows, increasing as the week progresses. • Life Cube Project Burn from: Dobbs Ferry, NY year: 2015<br />
<br />
The Life Cube is an engaging, interactive, art-driven environment for the expression of goals, dreams, wishes, and aspirations. Citizens of BRC inscribe their thoughts on message-walls and on wish-stick postcards deposited into the Cube. In the spectacular finale, the Cube and all the wishes are burned and sent out together into the universe. The Life Cube features a 24’ high architectural design with stairs, pillars, mirrors, posts, and high places inviting Playa visitors to walk through, climb, hang-out, touch and interact. The community can express themselves on write-boards, contribute to the tapestry wall, and watch painters creating collaborative murals all week long. At night the cube takes on new life with spectacular lighting that enhances the drama: wall-washers, spots, strobes, lasers, and psychedelic lights add brilliant color that changes interior rooms and spaces, sending rainbows across the dark Playa landscape and illuminating the art and people around the Cube. • Truth is Beauty is the second sculpture in a three-part series featuring singer/dancer Deja Solis, the first of which was Bliss Dance (2010). For Truth is Beauty, Deja stands on her toes, head back, arms raised, in an expression of radical self-acceptance and love. She can do this because she is safe. With the female body exposed and demystified you will see past what has been objectified and used to disempower: it’s the feeling, energy, strength, power… the person that remains. These sculptures featuring women safe in the present to express themselves, are meant to help raise consciousness around violence against women, begin a healing process to make room for women’s voices, and ultimately result in a balance of energy that will allow women and men to thrive… My intent is that these sculptures express this healing energy and inspire us to take action; to finally say enough is enough!

“Airfield for walking in the clouds” is a model of a fantasy airfield with ten dream-liners “Armchairs for walking in the clouds.”<br />
The project is a large-scale interactive installation where people will be sitting and swinging in the “Armchairs for walking in the clouds” where they will be able to “break away” from the ground and be closer to their dreams. “Airfield for walking in the clouds” is a place where people can go on their own journey into the depths of their inner space.<br />

Is extinction forever? This work seeks to generate a reflection on the increasingly possible cloning of extinct species. Since the origin of life, evolution has never returned to a vanished species. However, human science is about to break this rule. Is it ethical and moral to play gods? Through scientific reproductions of a neanderthal and a saber-toothed tiger that emerge from the earth (extinction) to cross a DNA helix and reach our present with a paleo-reconstruction where the visitor can interact and then go through a series of circles that forms the geometry of life arrive at a mythical alebrije that represents the transmutation of our matter.<br />

<br />
Passage is an installation of a man, in a captive gesture, leisurely walking while its hand sweeps through stalks of wheat. The sculpture clearly highlights characteristics of a human form; muscle, sinuous tendon, sculpted hands, feet. Yet, it’s a composite of mechanical debris and steel. Viewers may hypothesize, is this a man? is it part robot? and what is the blurry fine-line between each? The other huge component is the presence of the wheat. It symbolizes abundance, life, fertility. It is food, subsistence, of which without, the human race would be extinct. Viewers can look closer at the inherent beauty of the human form, contemplate mechanics/technology or most importantly, be reminded of our absolute reliance on nature in the end. <br />
As you walk from the city deep into the playa, a series of objects slowly come into view, rising from the desert. Lost. Incomplete. Scattered. A series of giant children’s toys comes into focus. You can make out the letters L-O-V and E on alphabet blocks partially buried, emerging from the dust, the letter “O” taller than you. As you near, the beaten, weathered features and faded primary colors become clear. “Remember When…” it was all so simple….<br />

<br />
The Quadrupod is a giant metal walking vehicle that is driven from within a metal pod cabin. This giant machine walks on 4 electrically powered legs and looks like something out of a Jules Vern novel. The purpose of this work is to show how just a little low tech engineering and a pile of scrap metal can be used to create something that appears to be advanced technology. This art piece is meant to inspire do it yourself Sci-Fi<br />

  • Forest of Dreams by Laura Kimpton and crew<br />
<br />
The Forest of Dreams is formed of 40 trees, 10ft tall, all made of steel. The trees are to be arranged on a square grid, 10 trees by 10 trees, placed in concentrically smaller grids and culminating in an open area at the center. The forest will be bathed in dancing LED lights of multitude of colors shining through the shaped cutouts in the trees. Citizens of Black Rock Desert will be able to see the forest for miles. My hope is the forest will be placed in deep playa past the temple so it will be dark enough for the forest to shine. Our hope is for participants will interact with the forest in the most magical way. As one will enter the forest, the will find a world of colorful beauty where one can let go, dance, be silly, discover a new more playful self. As an installation artist my goal is to create art that is experiential. With the Forest, participants not only physically walk through and explore the piece, they get lost in the space and become one with the forest.<br />

The Upward Spirals of Love is an immersive art installation created to showcase the transformative power of love. During the day, the 8 foot iridescent faceted heart projects multi-colored neon green and pink shadows on the playa floor, and at dusk it lights up and comes to life with custom programmed LED patterns that run up the spiral to the heart, giving an effect of an Upward Spiral of Love. As a gift from Nick to his beloved Brigitte, this piece creates a space for people to feel safe, to heal, to connect and to fall in love through the universal language of love. Each of the 5 Love Languages is illuminated in a circle of 5 steel hearts that the visitor can step onto, identifying the type of love that makes them feel the most loved.

A creative imagination of “walking dreams”, it stitches together bubbles that allow people to move throughout the structure’s different dreamlike universes. This monumental complex will span 42 x 78 x 42 ft.<br />
<br />
The title comes from Mebuyan, a goddess from the Bagobo mythology, an indigenous people of southern Mindanao, Philippines. A goddess of the afterlife with breasts covering her entire body, she is nourishes the dead spirits of children, so that they can continue their journey of growth. Similarly, Mebuyan Vessel strives to become a nourishing, transformative, and cosmic place for

  • BROKEN 2.0 by Michael Benisty - I was out here shooting and young woman stumbled towards me in tears. She was a complete mess. She was a new burner and had been completely lost in the dust for three hours out in deep playa near the trash fence and she could not figure out how to get back to her camp. She was shaking and weak. She was out of water and having a panic attack. So I gave her water and offered food which she didn't want. I tried to calm her down a little. That wasn't working very well so I kept telling her everything was going to be fine while I dragged her back to her camp. The camp was Feed The Artists if memory serves. After I got some of her campmates' attention they looked after her and gave her the support she needed. She was in good hands so I went back to shooting. She later sent me a text saying how thankful she was that I had helped her. I had almost forgotten how disorienting and scary the dust storms can be for new burners.

<br />
The sculpture will be a topless women holding an old diving helmet over her head.<br />

<br />
The interior will have many elements of pipes, dials, compasses and reused marine gadgets as if you are entering a submarine. Information about our relation to the seas, and how we can help our oceans, will be placed throughout.<br />

  • Hope by Ali B.<br />
<br />
The clenched fist has long been used as a symbol of resistance. This can be traced back to the 19th century, when revolutionaries first used it against the European monarchies. It was later adopted by Europe’s anti-fascist movement. In the 1960’s, most famously through Tommy Smith and John Carlos at the Mexico City Olympics, it became both an iconic symbol of the Black Power Movement and a universal representation of the struggle for civil and human rights. The image symbolizes the ongoing racism and injustice throughout the world, but it is also a beacon of power, pride and perseverance – holding the promise of ‘Hope’.<br />

  • Providing WIFI at Exodus was Fun - I had my little Starlink terminal so I used it to gave people WIFI during exodus. At the start of each pulse I would show this sign to all the cars near me. At first everyone thought I was joking and laughed. Watching their faces go from laughing to "oh really I can watch cat videos right here and now?!" was hilarious. For many Burners it was their first time communicating with family and friends since before the burn and they were absolutely ecstatic. Exodus was super fun for me. I also ran the WIFI network at our camp. We had 100% uptime between the Starlink and the participant network because Dan rules!

  • Bee Dance by: Andrea Greenlees, Andy Tibbetts, and Josh Haywood from: London, UK & Reno, NV year: 2019 Bee Dance is a whimsical and inviting art installation in the form of two gigantic Dancing Bees, their legs entwined and their heads touching in a bee kiss. It celebrates one of the most fascinating examples of communication in the natural world — when forager bees return from their exploratory flights and perform the Bee Dance for the other bees, carrying out specific routines in order to communicate the distance and direction of pollen, nectar and water from the hive. Bee Dance is a strong climbable structure that Burners can clamber over and cling to, just as pollen clings to a bee. The Bees are bronze in colour, but on their dancing feet they wear gleaming copper ballet shoes with copper ribbons. The Bees are transformed into dancers. • love, earth by: The love, earth writer collective from: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada year: 2019 The largest love letter movement ever conceived. The purpose: to inspire a clean climate future by spreading simple commitments to our planet. The art is intended to mobilize citizens to use the power of sending and receiving letters of love from Earth to change, contribute and commit to an environment that we can all be proud of. The installation will be large enough to be captured from space, and thus our imaginations. In year one, a sky-facing comma will emerge and form a love letter altar. Within the wood structure, a writing area would support a hanging collection of completed letters, growing organically, drawing on attendees to contribute to a siren call from Earth, distributed around the world after the event by the artists.

<br />
High up in the night sky, a giant glowing sphere, half lit, half black, uneven surfaced, can be seen from far across the playa- except that it is a shape-shifting, dancing form that feels like a moving planet – an eclipse in motion. It is lit from the inside and suspended with a very specific internal tying technique that pivots it, allowing it to sometimes disappear, sometimes be all there, and everything in between, all through the flow of the wind. Hypnotic in its movement, reflecting the weather around it, appearing and disappearing in different parts of the playa, messing with all sense of orientation, the Moondancer by Lekha Washington.
