  • This Is Burning Man - Two people Mooping out in deep playa near the end of a burn. Nobody asked them to do this. They are just doing it because that's what Burners do. Burning Man is not all glamour and partying. It's actually mostly just lots of hard work. Much of the hard work goes on without much fanfare. Like the hour or so these two spent picking up somoene else's mess. From the people back at home in support roles, to the builds, to the restoration crews, DPW, and so on, Burning Man is hard work that's what makes it singular.

  • This photo is upside down. This is how Gaudi figured out how to design La Sagrada Familia, by hanging lead weights by string to create perfect curves for the supports...Wikipedia:...Gaudí spent ten years working on studies for the design of La Sagrada Família and developing a new method of structural calculation based on a model built with cords and small sacks of lead shot. The outline of the church was traced on a wooden board (1:10 scale), which was then placed on the ceiling of a small house next to the work site. Cords were hung from the points where columns were to be placed. The sacks of pellets, weighing one ten-thousandth part of the weight the arches would to support, were hung from each catenaric arch formed by the cords. Photographs were then taken of the resulting model from various angles. When the photographs were turned upside-down, the lines of tension formed by the cords and weights revealed the lines of pressure of the compressed structure. This is one of the ways that Gaudí obtained natural forms in his work...The same expressive power of Gaudí's monumental works exists in his oddly graceful chairs and tables. Gaudí's architecture is a total integration of materials, processes and poetics. His approach to furniture design exceeded structural expression and continued with the overall architectural idea.[20]..en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoni_Gaud%c3%ad ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoni_Gaud%c3%ad )

  • The Harmoniscope from: Seattle, WA year: 2016<br />
<br />
The Harmoniscope is a 20′ tall mysteriously pulsing 9-sided structure that transports participants to another place in space-time. Inside is an 8-sided column containing a reactor core made up of many colorful spiraling acrylic rods, the light from which gets reflected back to the outside of the building and on to the playa. It requires participants to work together to decipher the mystery of how it works, and why it’s here. Participants must decipher an unknown language, illustrated on a Rosetta Stone, using audio/visual cues, a kaleidoscopes and controls to collectively align the reactor core. Once aligned, they will be rewarded with a dramatic sound and lighting event that energizes it, triggering the journey that will bring them to their next destination. • Cloud Swing by: Lindsay Glatz with Curious Form from: New Orleans, LA year: 2019 Cloud Swing consists of swings suspended from a glowing cloud. Through utilizing a ubiquitous symbol of childhood, the work remains accessible and unassuming. The swing itself generates feelings of nostalgia and simplicity. While the swings remain unoccupied, the cloud above emanates a steady white glow of light, appearing to float within the darkness. The light shines downward highlighting the empty swing in an invitation for passersby to enjoy its delights. Once the swing is occupied the transformation and color begins to glow. Cloud Swing explores the transformative possibilities of imagination and innovation. Showcasing that no matter what pulls you back wonder, delight, and joy will inevitably push you forward. • The Temple by: Marish Farnsworth and Steven Brummond from: Oakland, CA year: 2017<br />
<br />
The form of the Temple begins with life out of balance. Throughout the Sierra Nevada, species of pine trees are dying, compromised by a bark beetle which has proliferated due to human interruption of the cycle of forest fires, and climate change. The material of these trees, donated to our project, harvested and milled, becomes the basic building block of the Temple. Interlocking timber pieces in formation become a Temple that is both cloud and spire; inverted pyramidal columns suggest the negative-space of a forest canopy, simultaneously supporting a vast pagoda-like ‘cloud’ framework which in turn supports a central spire. In this way disorder gives way to harmony, and a group of dying trees is re-ordered into a cathedral of timbers stretching toward the sky; filtered sun rays will illuminate the intricate work of hundreds of hands building in unison; a collaboration that knits together a community as roots intertwine to give a healthy forest stability. <br />
The Spire of Fire is a work of fire art that stands grand and high on the expanse of the open landscape much like a skyscraper in a metropolis. The tower’s height, geometry, metal textures are designed to reflect the evolution of modern metropolitan architecture. Its sheer size and presence will draw your attention from afar. At night the piece will come alive with brightly colored lights and bursts of rhythmic flame. URL: http://www.spireoffire.com/

  • Transmutation<br />
by: Arturo Gonzalez<br />
from: Saltillo, Coahuila Mexico<br />
year: 2019<br />
<br />
Is extinction forever? This work seeks to generate a reflection on the increasingly possible cloning of extinct species. Since the origin of life, evolution has never returned to a vanished species. However, human science is about to break this rule. Is it ethical and moral to play gods? Through scientific reproductions of a neanderthal and a saber-toothed tiger that emerge from the earth (extinction) to cross a DNA helix and reach our present with a paleo-reconstruction where the visitor can interact and then go through a series of circles that forms the geometry of life arrive at a mythical alebrije that represents the transmutation of our matter.<br />

  • Mutant Vehicle (name unknown) and the Head Maze<br />
<br />
Head Maze<br />
by: Matthew Schultz and The Pier<br />
from: Reno, NV<br />
year: 2019<br />
<br />
The Head Maze is a purposeful juxtapositions of two forms, a peaceful meditative reflection and our inevitable struggle with the nature of cognition; a monolithic mind caught in time between multiple selves. The head towers four stories over the playa floor, encased in mulberry paper and epoxy modeled after the work of Yoshio Ikezaki. The head rests in repose while its left hand claws at its mind fighting to reveal a crystalline stained glass structure akin to the “Space Whale” inside.<br />
<br />
A series of hidden doors in the mouth, wrists and head open into a four story, 18 room maze. Each modular room creates a unique space dedicated to the nature of our minds, our struggles with being and the weird and fanciful process of dreaming.<br />

  • Paraluna by: Christopher Schardt from: Oakland, CA year: 2018<br />
<br />
Paraluna combines kinetic sculpture, LEDs and music. Its main component is a disc 10m in diameter with 17,280 LEDs. A computer controls the LEDs while rotating, raising, lowering, and tilting the disc.<br />
<br />
Some of the LED patterns work with the rotation of the disk, creating spirals. Others use persistence-of-vision, making an image hover in space above the spinning LEDs. Spokes demonstrates both of these styles: https://photos.app.goo.gl/DcP9IauNTjRHENUh2<br />
<br />
Surrounding the disc are several high-quality speakers that play classical music at comfortable, yet immersive volume, creating a comfortable, peaceful place to be. Patterns are chosen to complement each musical piece, as with Firmament:<br />

  • Quadrupod 2.0 by Scott Parenteau<br />
<br />
The Quadrupod is a giant metal walking vehicle that is driven from within a metal pod cabin. This giant machine walks on 4 electrically powered legs and looks like something out of a Jules Vern novel. The purpose of this work is to show how just a little low tech engineering and a pile of scrap metal can be used to create something that appears to be advanced technology. This art piece is meant to inspire do it yourself Sci-Fi<br />

  • The Little People by uckiood (Missy Douglas & Kim Rask)<br />
<br />
From uckiood (Missy Douglas & Kim Rask) – the creators of ‘Odd Jelly Out’ – comes ‘The Little People’. Inspired by characters from classic children’s literature, this sculpture installation sees Dot (Dorothy, Wizard of Oz), and Chip (Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh) reimagined with playful charm. They are accompanied by both Peg the sausage dog (Toto) and an Odd Jelly Out toy (Pooh bear), as well as three small sprite-like entities – a grumpy Pants (Peter Pan), a toadstooly Mads (Alice in Wonderland) and Lolly the Lion (Lucy from Narnia). Created from hand-cast fiberglass, resin pieces and stained glass, these dazzling figures fuse symbolism from the books with dream-like details and maximalist textures, colors and pattern work.<br />

  • Evapotrons are devices people build to help deal with graywater by evaporating it. The top portion of this device was spinning around. I'm not sure how well they work. My strategy is to just haul my graywater out and disposing of it correctly. A burner has put some information on these here, not sure if relevant or up to date: https://sites.google.com/site/evapotrons/

  • Facing the Fearbeast by Tigre Mashaal-Lively & Make Love Visible<br />
<br />
‘Facing the Fearbeast’ is a project about facing the fears that hound us, both externally and internally. A snarling monster of claws and teeth and nightmares looms over a lone child, who faces the monster with dignified courage.<br />
The Beast itself represents both the actual dangers that threaten us from outside as well as the complex of traumas, self-deceits, & phobias that exists within and perpetuates the many miseries that humans deliver upon each other and themselves.<br />
<br />
The Child figures represent both the Wounded/traumatized child that is often at the core of many of humanity’s most destructive and violent behavior, as well as the Healing child that is both vulnerable and powerful in their creativity and capacity for love.<br />

  • Fragments, 2019 by: Marc Ippon de Ronda from: Paris, France year: 2019<br />
<br />
“Fragments” by French artist Marc Ippon de Ronda has been designed for Burning Man 2019. Where the artist turns an old Black Rock Desert legend into reality. The installation plays with the illusion of appearances and our ever-changing perception of self and surroundings, a recurring theme in de Ronda’s work. During the day Burners see their reflections evolve inside the fragmented mirrors as they move through the sand winds and find shelter in its corners and covers. At sunrise and sunset the installation invites for meditation. Burners ascend and descend the central staircase experiencing a golden hue of warmth from the sun. At night, “Fragments” shifts again into abstract LED surfaces creating a magical apparition in the desert darkness. URL: https://fragmentsart.org Contact: contact@fragmentsart.org

  • The Temple by: Marish Farnsworth and Steven Brummond from: Oakland, CA year: 2017<br />
<br />
• Firedancer at Methuselah is a 20′ metal sculpture of the world’s oldest tree. The tree’s bark is steel, patinated to blue, brown & white, and seams of glass reveal propane flames within the trunk, reflected in a mirror below. The tree’s roots form benches on which Burners can congregate. Ancestry and evolution are central themes for our work, whose namesake’s rings and branches bore witness to the entire span of recorded human history. Great trees gave their limbs and leaves as axles, paper, bows, hulls and roofs, and held space and time for our ancestors’ radical rituals. Black Rock City contains many altars of dance and ecstasy, and many more of learning and relaxation, but the city provides comparatively few spaces for contemplation and remembrance. Circular spaces, lone trees and eternal flames are all strong ritualistic symbols and joining them in Methuselah helps to dislocate Participants from the frenzy of present day time and re-anchors them in the still time of mythology.
