• The bulk carrier, Federal Nakagawa, gracefully glides through the calm waters of the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York, maintaining an unusually slow pace as it passes by the historic and majestic Boldt Castle. This gentle speed ensures minimal wake, preserving the serenity of the surrounding landscape. Nestled among the lush scenery of the Thousand Islands, this tranquil passage highlights the harmonious coexistence of modern maritime transport with the natural beauty and historic architecture found in the region. The scene captures a moment where the Federal Nakagawa, a symbol of modern commerce, peacefully shares the stage with the timeless charm of Boldt Castle and its idyllic surroundings.
• Passage by: Dana Albany from: San Francisco, CA year: 2018

Passage is an installation of a man, in a captive gesture, leisurely walking while its hand sweeps through stalks of wheat. The sculpture clearly highlights characteristics of a human form; muscle, sinuous tendon, sculpted hands, feet. Yet, it’s a composite of mechanical debris and steel. Viewers may hypothesize, is this a man? is it part robot? and what is the blurry fine-line between each? The other huge component is the presence of the wheat. It symbolizes abundance, life, fertility. It is food, subsistence, of which without, the human race would be extinct. Viewers can look closer at the inherent beauty of the human form, contemplate mechanics/technology or most importantly, be reminded of our absolute reliance on nature in the end.

 • This serene and introspective image captures the essence of the end of fall along the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region. Leaves gently float by, creating marvelous textures and ripples on the water's surface, while a stone rests in the foreground. As the seasons change, the river symbolizes a connection to nature and time, washing things away and rejuvenating the soul. The tranquility and peace of this scene invite reflection and contemplation on the passage of time and life's natural cycles.
• This striking black and white photograph by Duncan Rawlinson showcases a steel bridge, its bold lines and stark contrasts reminiscent of a graphite sketch. The almost graphic nature of the image highlights the powerful structure of the bridge, emphasizing the strength and durability of the steel it is composed of. The interplay between light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer's eye across the bridge's span. This image captures not only the architectural beauty of the bridge, but also the essence of its purpose: connecting two sides and providing passage. The monochromatic color scheme adds a timeless quality to the photograph, evoking a sense of nostalgia for bygone days when steel bridges were marvels of engineering and artistry.
• In the tranquil heart of the 1000 Islands in Ontario, Canada, lies a picturesque scene where the first snow of the season has gently blanketed the landscape. A dirt road meanders through the quiet forest, curving gracefully out of sight behind a cluster of snow-clad trees. The stillness of the winter air is tangible, as the hushed forest invites us to pause and appreciate the beauty of nature in its purest form.

On either side of the winding road, the snow embraces the trees, accentuating their majestic presence. The tall pine trees stand as silent witnesses to the serene winter spectacle, their branches adorned with a layer of frosty crystals. The woodland wonder of this snowy bend creates a moment of tranquility, as the frosty pines and the frozen forest invite us into a world where time stands still.

This enchanting winter scene, captured by photographer Duncan Rawlinson, offers a glimpse of the peaceful solitude that can be found amidst the snowy woods of the 1000 Islands. The snow-covered road, embraced by the frosty forest, serves as a gentle reminder of the quiet moments of reflection that the season provides. As we journey along this snowy passage, we are drawn into a world of winter serenity, where the whispers of the trees and the silence among them create a truly timeless experience.
• Description from Wikipedia: Gate to the Northwest Passage is a 1980 sculpture by Alan Chung Hung, located adjacent to the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Vanier Park in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The 4.6-metre (15 ft) sculpture of a square, cut and twisted "like a paper clip" to form an arch, is composed of weathered Corten steel that rusts to provide a protective layer. The work was installed in 1980 to commemorate the arrival of Captain George Vancouver in Burrard Inlet, following a competition sponsored by Parks Canada one year prior. Gate to the Northwest Passage received an adverse reaction initially, but reception has improved over time. The sculpture has been included in walking tours of the surrounding neighborhoods as a highlight of Vanier Park.

The Temple of Direction is organized linearly. It recreates a restricted passage which expands in the center into a large hall. This is a response to the openness of the playa; it creates a space traveled end to end; versus wandering an open plan; this temple provides direction and focus. Linearity also reflects the passage of life; all lives have a beginning, a middle and an end which metaphorically is included in this temple’s form. Following this metaphor a variety of spaces are created; narrow spaces and wide spaces, dark spaces and bright spaces. Tunnels create intimate experiences with shade.. A large central hall expands in width and height providing a bright area suitable for gatherings.
• SACRA
by: Kirsten Berg

Sacra is a totemic gateway, symbolizing a pivotal point between infinite and finite. The sacrum (= ‘holy bone’) is the first gateway through which we metamorphize from space to substance, into the wordly realm. It is also the last bone that disintegrates, holding ritual significance in ancient cultures, as a reminder of the past and future passage that we all share. Sacra’s focal point is a ‘sacral object’, embedded with convex mirrors reflecting our shared cellular origins; a bowed gate like a funnel for source into form; a silhouette echoing Japanese torii gates, which traditionally indicate a passage between the profane/worldly plane to the sacred. “Sacra” mirrors that journey, literally and poetically, in reverse and also ‘in between’.
• This image of a decaying billboard near Gananoque, Ontario, Canada, has layers of advertisements from years past slowly peeling away. The eroded panels reveal a visual diary of forgotten messages and lost promotions, blending together. These textures and fragmented memories serve as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of advertising, while the remaining remnants stand as silent testimonies to the ever-changing nature of our culture and society.
• Autumn Spire by Eric Coolidge

The piece is inspired by the natural balance of organic and geometric properties in nature. The title refers to a red maple tree, a symbol of endurance and the passing of time. The tower, a blend of gothic and modern technology, is meant to combine these notions. The passage of time is important to me, and whether it is my perspective or an objective truth, society as a whole feels to be entering into a new season. It feels like something is ending, but as we pass from autumn into winter, so follows spring.
• In this photograph, dead trees stand solemnly amidst a vast field of yellow, dry grass. The scene evokes a sense of desolation and decay, yet there is an undeniable beauty in the contrast between the lifeless trees and the sun-drenched landscape. The golden hues of the grass create a serene and tranquil atmosphere, while the stark, skeletal branches of the trees serve as a poignant reminder of the harsh reality of drought and arid conditions. As one gazes upon this image, it is impossible not to feel a deep sense of connection to the resilience of nature and its ability to withstand the passage of time. This powerful photograph is a testament to the haunting beauty that can be found even in the most desolate corners of the world.
• This atmospheric photograph captures an abandoned well drill rig and truck, left to the elements on Hartnet Road in Cathedral Valley, Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. The rusty machinery, riddled with bullet holes, tells a story of a bygone era, as it stands as a decaying monument to the passage of time. The contrast between the man-made structures and the rugged natural beauty of the desert creates a captivating scene, inviting viewers to ponder the history of this forsaken machinery and the stories it could tell.
The rectangular shape of the wreck, which could be a barge or a ship, piques curiosity as the rusty wheel protrudes above the water's surface. The nearby trees display a stunning array of golden hues, providing a beautiful and contrasting backdrop to the enigmatic scene. The image serves as a testament to the passage of time, as nature slowly reclaims this once-seafaring vessel.
• Charon by: Peter Hudson from: San Francisco, CA year: 2017

A gigantic 30′ spinning wheel with posed human skeletons mounted on its inner edge, Charon is fully powered by a minimum of 12 people working in unison. Participants are invited to pull a series of 6 ropes which cause the wheel to rotate progressively faster. When the rope pullers are coordinated enough to get the wheel spinning at the correct speed, a strobe is activated, revealing the skeletons’ animation. The animation tells the story of Charon, the mythological gondolier and ferryman of Hades who carried the souls of the recently departed across the river Styx, the last right of passage on the way to the afterlife. • In the heart of the Canadian 1000 Islands, a weathered door stands as a silent witness to the passage of time. With its sun-kissed, faded appearance, it exudes a rustic charm and tells the story of the barn it guards. Each textured layer of peeling paint and aged wood reveals a rich history, giving the door its unique character. This image, captured by Duncan Rawlinson, transports the viewer to a moment in time where they can reflect on the beauty of nature and the stories this old barn door has to share.
• Amidst the tranquil countryside, a solitary tree stands proudly, its branches adorned with amber and red leaves, an ode to the changing seasons. This striking maple tree, with its vibrant fall foliage, serves as the centerpiece of the serene landscape. A weathered stone wall stretches across the foreground, adding a touch of rustic charm to the scene. Beyond the wall, the land gently rolls towards two quaint buildings, likely a barn and a possible winery, hinting at the agricultural nature of the area.

Bathed in the golden hues of autumn, the scene encapsulates the essence of rural life. The crisp air and the distant mist create an idyllic atmosphere, blending the boundaries between reality and dream. The rich tones of the leaves contrast beautifully against the backdrop of the misty countryside, evoking a sense of quietude and mystery.
Nestled in the heart of Ontario, this picturesque landscape showcases the province's natural beauty during its most colorful season. The photo, taken by Duncan Rawlinson, captures a fleeting moment in time, immortalizing the scene's peaceful ambiance and stunning composition.
