• Shewolf
by: Chris Mack
from: Monterey, CA
year: 2019

The Shewolf is nature, constantly giving and directing our growth for thousands of years. Only recently has man conquered nature by what we think is a smart and clever manipulation for our benefit. “What nature can do, man can do better.”

Or can we? Has man depleted our mother or is she still willing to nurture us? Come out and drink from the elixir from nature’s breasts. Lay in her shadow, protected from harm.

Shewolf now has a partner wolf. Can he keep up? Can we keep up?

Confront nature and yourself as you journey along 27 stones floating above the Playa. Step into an alternate reality where destructive energy has been harmonized with nature to create moments of physical and mental elevation. Stone 27 finds great inspiration in simplicity, minimalism, and math to create clearness and consciousness in a material world, inviting you to a moment of complete presence. • Skywhale: The Not ShyWhale by: Blake Marcus, Chris Welch, Seven from: Amherst, MA year: 2019

The SkyWhale is a life sized flying technicolor whale and she will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder within all who see, touch, and listen to the piece as she arrives into the dusty desert. She strives to open the possibility of using the sky as a 3-dimensional medium for art. In nature, water creatures live in a place physically below that of terrestrial humans, and they have been downstream of many harmful human activities. SkyWhale aims to show that there can be progress and she can help heal and transform the human relationship with Nature. In recognition of the metamorphosis theme, the SkyWhale will embody the transformation of a sea creature to dream that takes to the air. • Mutant Vehicle (name unknown) and the Head Maze

Head Maze
by: Matthew Schultz and The Pier
from: Reno, NV
year: 2019

The Head Maze is a purposeful juxtapositions of two forms, a peaceful meditative reflection and our inevitable struggle with the nature of cognition; a monolithic mind caught in time between multiple selves. The head towers four stories over the playa floor, encased in mulberry paper and epoxy modeled after the work of Yoshio Ikezaki. The head rests in repose while its left hand claws at its mind fighting to reveal a crystalline stained glass structure akin to the “Space Whale” inside.

A series of hidden doors in the mouth, wrists and head open into a four story, 18 room maze. Each modular room creates a unique space dedicated to the nature of our minds, our struggles with being and the weird and fanciful process of dreaming.
• Island of Lost Buoys and Skywhale: The Not ShyWhale

Island of Lost Buoys
by: Lillian Heyward and The Island of Lost Buoys, a Create Change Project
from: Bluffton, SC
year: 2019

On the playa is an Island, a wooden tree dominates the center made of recycled pallets, crates and drift wood. Leaves of sculpted plastic bottles rustle in the wind. Strung from a branch is a hammock made of fishing net attached to a ocean buoy marooned on the beach. Hanging from the branches are sea buoys and balls providing a place to write names or leave a message to those who will come after.

Hanging from branches are bamboo wind chimes that softly clatter in the breeze. It is an island, a refuge, a place of calm and childhood in the stormy seas of life. It appears out of the playa as a mirage, the fantasy playground of youth. Discarded materials transform into an oasis, as our adult lives transform back to childhood. Bangarang!
• Autumn Spire by Eric Coolidge

The piece is inspired by the natural balance of organic and geometric properties in nature. The title refers to a red maple tree, a symbol of endurance and the passing of time. The tower, a blend of gothic and modern technology, is meant to combine these notions. The passage of time is important to me, and whether it is my perspective or an objective truth, society as a whole feels to be entering into a new season. It feels like something is ending, but as we pass from autumn into winter, so follows spring.
• Pauper's Ballroom by: Pedro Loughran from: Sebastopol, CA year: 2019

A Pauper’s Ballroom is what our parents tell us when walking down to a beach, a clearing or any other beautiful place in nature. A palace free to all. A pauper’s ballroom. The piece is a grand staircase with no second floor, framed by four towers. The way to the ballroom is to climb the staircase, turn around and then descend. The ballroom is the playa but best appreciated through the descent of a staircase, giving you the trappings of grandeur, while being merely pretense to the actual beauty of the free, natural space of the playa. “Nothing” is the absence of substance. It is the void, the infinite unknown. In this way, the “Stairway to Nothing” is the “Stairway to the Void.” Or it’s just the “Stairway to the Playa’s Second Floor.” URL: http://paupersballroom.org Contact: david.nelsongal@gmail.com

 • Ursa Major from: Alameda, California year: 2016

Reaching to grab what is within her grasp is Ursa Major, a 14 foot tall, grizzly bear sow. She may simply be reaching for berries but perceivably she is reaching higher: to the northern sky and the constellation that is her name, Ursa Major. In navigation, the constellation is useful in pointing the way to the North Star.
Ursa Major’s pose is inspiring, she brings the gaze and hopes of the participant skyward. She also demonstrates respect for the bears and nature, her pose is not like a taxidermy bear. She is in her natural state and unthreatening. With a durable, unique material that was used on their previous Burning Man project (Penny the Goose), Ursa Major’s fur will be made of US and Canadian pennies. The pattern and feel will be like fur. • The Face is an open invitation to face oneself. Collaged from Haeckel’s biological illustrations and synced with Rumi’s poetic calling, is the airy sculpture of 1D elements. Standing as a symbol of unity, the Face bridges: East & West, spiritual & biological, aquatic & terrestrial, fauna & flora.

Aquatic creatures constitute the elements forging the parallax illusion of a genderless portrait collage. Ambient music, sounds of nature, & multilingual echoes of Rumi’s call, seduce wandering souls in BRC with a multisensorial composition that awakens the mind.
The Face beckons to all and guides without advice. The target is meditative dialogue. The process is intentional & incremental: one step at a time, one visitor after the other.
• Sirsasana - Headstand by Srikanth Guttikonda, Josh Zubkoff, & Looking Up Arts

Rising 30 feet from the playa, Sirsasana is a whimsical inverted tree with its roots reaching for the sky. Its trunk is interwoven wooden arcs based on the golden ratio that form a hyperboloid. The tree’s canopy spreads out on the playa floor with openings that invite participants to explore its intricate inner geometry.

Sirsasana represents the ability to re-learn one’s own nature, the ability to change, to create new perspectives. It was born from a thought experiment that if a human can do Vrksasana, the tree pose in yoga, then can a tree do Sirsasana, a human-centric headstand pose?

Sirsasana’s beautiful radiating geometry will be covered leaf to roots with sentimental details to explore from Srikanth’s childhood home of Hyderabad.
Mark proceeded to hand me a sticker with his face on it. Which was also amazing and it added to the meta nature of this brief moment. Mark, if you see this your videos helped get us through the pandemic. We love them. Thank you for making them! Google 24 Hours at Burning Man to see Mark’s amazing films.

 • Sysimetsä by: LaynaJoy Rivas & Eva Reiska with The Landing Ravens Art Collective from: Ravens Landing, Clearlake Oaks, CA year: 2017

Beauty lies within the Burnt Forest. Sysimetsä is a memorial for the fires that destroyed Lake County, as well as a beloved art space by the name of Ravens Landing back in 2015. Participants walk through a burnt forest with trees that stand erected from the playa with huge ravens perched upon their branches. Pieces of burnt metal and scraps are hand crafted instruments of sound, bringing the forest back to life through interactivity. The sound sensitive lighting will dance to the beat of our hearts. This place is a temple for the old and new, a sacred piece of nature that is awoken to hold space to give thanks to what’s been given and what’s been taken. In the belief that change is the only constant grace given to Humankind, to embrace it in all ways is the only way to brighten our evolution. The philosophy of Sysimetsä is to Experience, Let Go, Accept, Be Thankful, and Recreate the world you want to live in.

 • The Tree of Ténéré builders pause for a brief moment to watch the sunrise. The Tree of Ténéré by: Alexander Green, Zachary Smith, and Patrick Deegan from: San Francisco, CA year: 2017

An enormous lifelike tree, Ténéré offers shade to wanderers, adventure to climbers, and transcendent community to those gathered beneath its 15,000 LED leaves. Like its namesake – considered the most isolated tree on Earth until its destruction in 1973 – Ténéré serves as a place of refuge and ritual for desert wanderers. Standing more than three stories tall, it beckons to passersby with the promise of shade and adventure, conjuring spontaneous communities out of desert sand and sun. At night, LEDs hidden within each leaf begin to glow. The 15,000 leaves form a dome-shaped “canvas of light” that towers over the playa, spanning more than a thousand square feet. Participants lying under the tree experience sublime light shows set to ambient music or live performance. And they directly influence the canopy lights through their sounds and biorhythms, creating moments of transcendent oneness with each other and with nature. • Le Attrata from: Oakland, CA year: 2016

After the Events of 2175, the perfect storm of industrial pollution, population explosion and the destruction of biodiversity raged. It was only a renewal of the vows between science and nature that saved us. The amount of horrendous wastes we had piled up over a millenia- much of it toxic and flammable- was daunting. The Fuocco Falene are a crux of biomech, artistry and divine intervention. Fire moths- drawn to the most noxious of wastes, able to consume the wastes and leave a benign byproduct. Their consumption of fuels is spectacular, so much so that Falena became sought after for their beauty. It has become fashionable to convert outdated civic fixtures, like fountains, to be attractions to the Fuocco Falena. Le Attrata is a prime example of such an installation, its jagged spires providing perches for the Falena, the curved benches housing seating for people, and the Falena chrysalises lighting the way throughout the night. • LOVE from: Odessa, Ukraine year: 2015

LOVE is a sculpture by Alexandr Milov. It demonstrates a conflict between a man and a woman as well as the outer and inner expression of human nature. The figures of the protagonists are made in the form of big metal cages, where their inner selves are captivated. Their inner selves are executed in the form of transparent children , who are holding out their hands through the grating. As it’s getting dark (night falls) the children chart to shine. This shining is a symbol of purity and sincerity that brings people together and gives a chance of making up when the dark time arrives. Contact: takoe.tm@gmail.com

 • Passage by: Dana Albany from: San Francisco, CA year: 2018

Passage is an installation of a man, in a captive gesture, leisurely walking while its hand sweeps through stalks of wheat. The sculpture clearly highlights characteristics of a human form; muscle, sinuous tendon, sculpted hands, feet. Yet, it’s a composite of mechanical debris and steel. Viewers may hypothesize, is this a man? is it part robot? and what is the blurry fine-line between each? The other huge component is the presence of the wheat. It symbolizes abundance, life, fertility. It is food, subsistence, of which without, the human race would be extinct. Viewers can look closer at the inherent beauty of the human form, contemplate mechanics/technology or most importantly, be reminded of our absolute reliance on nature in the end. Participants lying under the tree experience sublime light shows set to ambient music or live performance. And they directly influence the canopy lights through their sounds and biorhythms, creating moments of transcendent oneness with each other and with nature.

• Eternal Return by: Peter Hudson from: San Francisco, CA year: 2014

Zoetropes are remarkably qualified to portray the cyclical nature of life. I have been blessed with the opportunity to explore this timeless theme through diverse cultures and eras. In brief three-second loops I have been able to explore some of the most timeless tales that transcend culture.
The concept of the eternal return is touched upon in virtually all cultural and religious narratives. The concept can be found in Ancient Egyptian, Mayan and Aztec beliefs, in East Indian, and ancient Greek philosophy, as well as the 19th century deliberations of Friedrich Nietzsche. Tibetan Buddhism’s Bhavacakra is a symbolic representation of samsara, or “cyclic existence”

The concept of the eternal return speculates that the universe has been recurring, and will continue to recur, in a self-similar form, an infinite number of times across infinite time and/or infinite space. Contact: peter@hudzo.com

 • Cocoonap
by: Artmisto
from: Dnipro, Ukraine
year: 2019

Cocoonap is a combination of two words: cocoon and nap. Installation-transformer, which smoothly changes its appearance and tells a small parable. This is a visualization of a metaphorical dream about the changing and cyclical nature of life, about what is its basis. Birth, flourishing, development, dissolution in eternity.

The 3×4 meter installation will be made of wood, vividly decorated with LED-stripes for a spectacular show during the night, and the surface of the cocoon itself will be covered with stencils that will project metaphorical illustrations onto the surface of the desert.
