Duncan-Rawlinson-Photo-311859-Burnin...jpg
  • Lil Al from: New Orleans, LA year: 2015 (with light painting by me)

Lil Al is a A 60′ long roaring wooden alligator effigy and symbol of the NOLA burners coming together as a community. It’s a group effort that raises awareness of our love for each other, Mardi Gras, and Burning Man. The first rendition of this art was created to represent our spirit at the T-Bois Blues Festival in Larose, Louisiana about an hour south of New Orleans on a family owned alligator farm. This installation is the embodiment of how Burning Man can bring so many wonderful people together like family and encourage them to drive a giant lizard 2,000 miles across the country just to watch it burn among friends. • Facing the Fearbeast by Tigre Mashaal-Lively & Make Love Visible

‘Facing the Fearbeast’ is a project about facing the fears that hound us, both externally and internally. A snarling monster of claws and teeth and nightmares looms over a lone child, who faces the monster with dignified courage.
The Beast itself represents both the actual dangers that threaten us from outside as well as the complex of traumas, self-deceits, & phobias that exists within and perpetuates the many miseries that humans deliver upon each other and themselves.

The Child figures represent both the Wounded/traumatized child that is often at the core of many of humanity’s most destructive and violent behavior, as well as the Healing child that is both vulnerable and powerful in their creativity and capacity for love.

RIP Tigre Mashaal-Lively. My heart goes out to all friends, Burners, and Family of Tigre. I did not know Tigre and I was not sure if I should post these but I decided to post them for the community to honor the incredible work.

  • Big Dirty Secret by: Oz Wilcox from: Richland, WA year: 2018

Big Dirty Secret (BDS) is the second art piece in a series of Dirty Secret Art. Last year Little Dirty Secret was the first and was a huge sensation. BDS will be an 8’x8’x8′ Cube Box. A door will lead inside where Participants will find a rather large desk that accentuates the “Big” in BDS. In the drawers they’ll find, dirty mags, whiskey bottles, little black books with mistresses’ phones numbers, and other items that the office inhabitant would rather not divulge. Everyone has a secret. Most everyone has a job. Lots of folks are in mundane offices, laden with Motivation Posters, Calendars, and Pics of Family Members. This is where secrets are most often kept. LDS was the kids’ art, BDS is the Adult’s place to share their Dirty Secrets.

  • Temple Burn from: Petaluma, CA year: 2016

The temple this year will be built in the tradition of David Best temples, but with a significant departure from his usual style – this temple will be hand-built without CNC cut materials. It will be extremely ornate, with a large interior altar and a large chandelier. This temple will take on an ancient air, patina’ed with organic water-based stains, and look as if it were built hundreds of years in the past.

There will be 8 altars placed around the courtyard, which is walled off to create a protected, quiet, respectful space. The interactivity will be the usual function of the Burning Man temple: it will be a place for the community to come and express their emotions, reflect on the losses of friends and family members, and celebrate the lives of people around them. The temple will be built with the consideration of the community, with adequate space to accommodate the needs of people in the temple and the surrounding courtyard for reflection, safety and privacy. • The Orca Project from: Vancouver B.C., Canada year: 2016

The Orca project is a large-scale sculptural installation of a pod of orcas travelling through the ocean. Constructed out of wood, the pod of orcas invites participants to walk amongst them, to climb on them and to listen to their sounds. The intent is for participants to ponder our own relationship to family, community, animals and the natural world while raising awareness about the declining population of orcas in the Pacific North West. • Portal
by: David Oliver and the Art City Monsters
from: Ventura, CA
year: 2019

A Portal possible of transformation… not to that which is coming, but to things here. With a ring 12′ in diameter made from 4,608 stained glass tiles with a total of 24 colors, graduating the color wheel in a flowing mosaic that is two sided. Two 7-thousand-pound basalt stone columns stand guard from the left and from the right. Portal will also be lit with an increasing laser light show controlled on a theremin device, with sound effects that go off when one enters.

Symbiosis.

The color in harmony attracts vitality through beauty, like a flower does a bee. The bee gets food in exchange for spreading pollen. In the same manner one attracts to Portal. Coming out with powerful frequencies, to bounce off their friends, their family, the animals, EARTH, and even so called… “enemies.”
• Welcome Home
by: Joey Howell and Brian Dean of SALT MIND
from: Salt Lake City, UT
year: 2019

Burners call the playa home. Home not because of the location, but because of the people we share it with; friends, family, lovers, strangers. Welcome Home creates an absurdly normal setting by taking a space associated with default homes and bringing it to our true home. This fully decorated parlour in the sky invites wanderers to climb, explore, and enjoy the view.
• The Afterlife (build) by Blitzy aka Ade, Chickpea, Steve Dudek, Scott Pando, Noah Schnaubelt

The Afterlife is a visually stunning LED and blacklight installation. It is an immersive and interactive art piece arranged in a Tibetan-inspired mandala.

Forming the outer circle, The Four Gates of the Universe are cornerstones, aligned with the cardinal directions and connected by prayer flags.

Journey inwards, interact with fire-breathing dragons, Family of Flags, Flaming Lotus heaters, Windows of past life pagodas, incense urns and glowing Dazebeds. Anchored in the center is The Stairway to Heaven Temple.

The Afterlife is an ethereal and whimsical dreamland beyond our lifetime. A portal of transition between living and dead, it’s a meeting point between the two worlds attracting soul travelers from far away distances.
• I swear Burners are the most badass humans. I was really struggling to get our camp network up and running properly. This was during the transition from the temporary participant network to the main participant netork and I was very lost. I had misconfigured it the setup in several ways and could not unfuck it myself. Low and behold a networking expert visiting our camp so I asked for help. The playa providses. Dan selflessly helped to get us up and running spending many hours with me hacking on configs etc. Here I am, a complete stranger to Dan and he spends a HUGE amount of time helping to get us online. This is the kind of playa gift that makes burning man so great. Burners selflessly helping other Burners without anything or even any expectation of anything in return. The network was immediately put to good use. The Instagrammers were able to start posting right away. Thank goodmess! Gotta keep the dopamine flowing. Seriously though, my campmates and neighbors updated logistics plans and corrdinated with people off playa for replacement parts and you know like more nachos n stuff. Medical phone calls and other family emergencies got sorted out as well with the network. But mostly it was just cat videos. Thank you for helping us Dan. You are an absolute legend!

The Child figures represent both the Wounded/traumatized child that is often at the core of many of humanity’s most destructive and violent behavior, as well as the Healing child that is both vulnerable and powerful in their creativity and capacity for love.
• Providing WIFI at Exodus was Fun - I had my little Starlink terminal so I used it to gave people WIFI during exodus. At the start of each pulse I would show this sign to all the cars near me. At first everyone thought I was joking and laughed. Watching their faces go from laughing to "oh really I can watch cat videos right here and now?!" was hilarious. For many Burners it was their first time communicating with family and friends since before the burn and they were absolutely ecstatic. Exodus was super fun for me. I also ran the WIFI network at our camp. We had 100% uptime between the Starlink and the participant network because Dan rules!

Home not because of the location, but because of the people we share it with; friends, family, lovers, strangers.

• Portal Build
by: David Oliver and the Art City Monsters
from: Ventura, CA

• Temple Project from: Petaluma, CA year: 2016
