• Island of Lost Buoys
by: Lillian Heyward and The Island of Lost Buoys, a Create Change Project
from: Bluffton, SC
year: 2019

On the playa is an Island, a wooden tree dominates the center made of recycled pallets, crates and drift wood. Leaves of sculpted plastic bottles rustle in the wind. Strung from a branch is a hammock made of fishing net attached to a ocean buoy marooned on the beach. Hanging from the branches are sea buoys and balls providing a place to write names or leave a message to those who will come after.

Hanging from branches are bamboo wind chimes that softly clatter in the breeze. It is an island, a refuge, a place of calm and childhood in the stormy seas of life. It appears out of the playa as a mirage, the fantasy playground of youth. Discarded materials transform into an oasis, as our adult lives transform back to childhood. Bangarang!
• BORiNG Sign Camp BORiNG

Inspired by vintage Las Vegas casino signs and a healthy sense of irony, the BORiNG sign is an 18-ft tall, 20-ft long reminder to never take one’s self too seriously. The sign is made out of reclaimed sheet metal and discarded letters from dismantled corporate signs, hand painted, lit by 300 LED bulbs and securely attached to a welded base with wheels (and sometimes, pedal-power). The piece is fully mobile across the playa. You can usually find the BORiNG sign accompanying burns, alongside popular art projects, and framing the silhouette of the Man at sunset. With four 500-watt speakers and a playlist of danceables from the 60s, 70s and 80s, the mobile, rolling sign often attracts an entourage of sunset or late night boogie revellers.

 • Consumption by Tom Boughner and the Desert Propaganda Collective

Consumption is a 45′ tall sculpture in the shape of a dollar sign ($) assembled from discarded household appliances (washers, dryers, fridges, stoves, etc). Ninety appliances are layered and stacked to create the “S” of the dollar sign.

Consumption brings our focus to the end of the era of consumerism and overconsumption. Our current trajectory is no longer sustainable and we must change. Reflect upon the mountain of waste to guide our beliefs, ideas and spirits to a more rational use of earth’s limited resources.

We all play a part in the chain of excess that starts with raw materials and ends in landfills and oceans. Many factors tie us to our throw-away society. We are driven to
overconsumption.
• Robot Resurrection by: Shane Evans from: Denver, CO year: 2018

Robot Resurrection is towering 30 foot tall, human piloted, articulating sculpture made from reclaimed airplane parts and found objects. From the torso cockpit, the operator(s) manipulate the Robot’s motions and fire effects. This piece is a representation of we all have become… Robots. It is a wake-up call of how large these problems are. We have been controlled for too long. Robot Resurrection was born from what we as a society have discarded. Our hope is that this 28′ Robot will inspire reflection upon one’s self and be a reminder of the power we all hold. We hope it awakens some awareness of our situation and encourages some small change on a small scale that leads to big change in the massive system. Contact: ourbigrobot@gmail.com

Skywhale: The Not ShyWhale
by: Blake Marcus, Chris Welch, Seven
from: Amherst, MA
year: 2019

The SkyWhale is a life sized flying technicolor whale and she will kindle the flames of imagination and wonder within all who see, touch, and listen to the piece as she arrives into the dusty desert. She strives to open the possibility of using the sky as a 3-dimensional medium for art. In nature, water creatures live in a place physically below that of terrestrial humans, and they have been downstream of many harmful human activities. SkyWhale aims to show that there can be progress and she can help heal and transform the human relationship with Nature. In recognition of the metamorphosis theme, the SkyWhale will embody the transformation of a sea creature to dream that takes to the air.
• George is an amazing photographer. He has been shooting Burning Man for ages. In this photograph George is showing me his system for organizing Burning Man information while he is on playa. I asked him to show me when I told he where we we're camped and he quickly noted it. So simple and effective. Someone tells you something, and you just jot it down on an individual card. Then you can reshuffle later and discard as needed etc. I will steal this idea. Thanks George! My Burning Man 2018 Photos:
