One of my favorite things to photograph is events. There is something magic about being there on the spot and ready to capture something that will never happen again.

14 imagesEd Burtynsky's "Anthropocene" exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada in February 2019 was a profound reflection on humanity's impact on the natural world. The photographs, films, and immersive installations showcased the ways in which human activities have transformed the planet's landscape, and challenged visitors to consider their own relationship with the environment. Burtynsky's large-format photographs revealed the beauty and horror of our modern industrialized world. From sprawling mines to colossal dams, he captured the vast scale of human engineering and its effects on the land. The images were strikingly detailed, often capturing the intricate patterns of human intervention and the resulting ecological damage. The exhibition also featured films and installations that brought Burtynsky's work to life. Visitors were immersed in a multi-sensory experience that explored the devastating consequences of human activities, from deforestation to plastic pollution. One installation, "Bricks and Mortar," showcased the construction and demolition of buildings in China, revealing the staggering amount of waste generated by modern urbanization. Throughout the exhibition, Burtynsky highlighted the urgent need for change in our relationship with the planet. He challenged visitors to recognize their role in the Anthropocene, the current geological era defined by human influence, and to take action to preserve the natural world for future generations. Ed Burtynsky's "Anthropocene" exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada was a thought-provoking and visually stunning reflection on humanity's impact on the natural world. It will remain a powerful reminder of the need for environmental stewardship for years to come.

Rawlinson's photography masterfully captures the essence of Black Rock City—the temporary metropolis of the event—highlighting its architectural wonders, diverse art installations, interactive sculptures, and captivating performances. Art is central to the event, often emerging through ambitious large-scale projects by artist collectives. A notable feature of Burning Man is its gift economy, which replaces traditional commercial transactions with acts of generosity, fostering genuine human connections within the community. The visual spectacle of Burning Man extends beyond static artworks. The event is famous for its imaginative costumes and "mutant vehicles"—uniquely modified modes of transportation that roam the desert, adding a surreal dimension to the experience. The harsh desert conditions, characterized by extreme temperatures and occasional dust storms, require attendees to be highly self-sufficient and to follow the "Leave No Trace" principle. Ultimately, Burning Man offers a unique, transformative journey that combines art, community, and personal exploration against the stark backdrop of the Nevada desert. Rawlinson's photographic collection serves as a visual record, capturing the event's evolution and allowing for reflection on an unforgettable experience.

6 imagesCaptain John's Leaving Toronto on May 28, 2015 was a significant event in the city's maritime history. Captain John's was a popular seafood restaurant that had been operating aboard the M.V. Jadran, a retired cruise ship docked in Toronto's harbor since the 1970s. Unfortunately, the restaurant had fallen on hard times in recent years due to declining patronage and maintenance issues with the aging vessel. Despite efforts to revive the business, including a crowdfunding campaign, the owners were unable to keep the restaurant afloat. On May 28, 2015, the M.V. Jadran was towed away from its mooring in Toronto's harbor, marking the end of an era for the beloved restaurant. The departure of the ship was bittersweet for many Torontonians who had fond memories of dining on its decks while taking in the city skyline. The future of the M.V. Jadran remains uncertain, as it was eventually sold to a scrap dealer in Turkey, but the memories of Captain John's and its unique location in Toronto's harbor will live on.
